Yes, We Can Dine Like the President-Elect

Inauguration excitement is stirring up themed food and drinks inspired by President-elect Obama and his culinary roots. At Fyve in the Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City, DC will get a taste of Hawaii (poke, macadamia-crusted mahi-mahi) in à la carte offerings or as a $48 prix fixe from January 13th–20th; PS 7's is focusing on Illinois regional cuisine (who knew there was one?) in a four-course $65 prix fixe; and, finally, Asia Nine is rolling sushi with politics in mind, i.e., a lean, green Obama roll (filled with vegetables) and a Lame Duck roll (roasted duck, cucumber and soy nuggets).

Meanwhile, Nage is focusing attention on the soon-to-be No. 2, offering “Biden Brunches” (the restaurant's original location is in Rehoboth, DE) on January 4th, 11th, 18th and January 21st. Guests will be treated to a good-natured impersonation of Vice President-elect Joe Biden while they munch on the likes of “Southern Delaware Style Chicken in a Blanket” and “Northern Delaware Scrapple and Tater Tot Hash With Fried Eggs,” washed down with a cup of “Can I Call You Joe” or a “Farewell Bushwacker” – cream of coconut, Kahlua, Mount Gay rum, crème de cacao and a shot of espresso (brunch, 11:30 AM–3 PM; impersonator, noon–2PM).

Mixologists have also been inspired by the changing political scene. The Passion Foods Hospitality restaurants Acadiana, Ceiba, DC Coast, PassionFish and Ten Penh are pouring a sparkling concoction called “The Spirit” and a bourbon- and honey-based elixir dubbed “The Dream,” while Oya is guiding patrons down the “Road to the Wine House” with vinos from Illinois and specialty drink selections.
