Travel Tips

Whether your traveling for business or planning the vacation of a lifetime, our travel tips and useful resources can help you zero in on exactly the right place to stay. Download these travel tips ( ).

Ask and You
May Receive

Although occupancies and room rates are on the rise, those consumers who ask for special rates can still find deals. But be sure to call the on-site hotel reservationist directly rather than the toll-free operator. Hoteliers often are ready to deal, especially if your dates are flexible or it's during an offpeak time. Remember, a hotel's "rack rates" are just a jumping-off point from which to negotiate, and don't forget to ask about special promotions, upgrades, etc.

Net Worth

The best bargains often reside on the Web, particularly for last-minute lodging. You can get marked-down excess inventory by booking online through individual hotels or via sites such as Expedia, Priceline and Travelocity. Fully 70% of our surveyors book their trips on the Internet, and 37% say Expedia is the best for booking travel.

Hide-and-Seek Costs

Sometimes a deal isn't a deal once you scratch the surface, so be leery of taxes and extra charges (such as "resort fees," valet parking, etc.). Hotel phone charges are especially exorbitant, so use your cell when possible.

Loyalty Pays

If you enroll in loyalty programs offered by hotel chains, airlines or affiliated credit cards you can earn free nights and upgrades at your favorite haunts. Many hotels are beefing up the amenities and personalized services they offer their most frequent guests. Take advantage of it.

Beyond a Room
With a View

Make sure you know what you're getting when you book. There's a tremendous difference in room type, so ask where yours is located, what floor it's on, when it was last updated and what kind of view it has. Also inquire about renovations and any planned events that may disrupt your stay.

Quick Change

To speed your movement through airport security, wear outer clothing that's easily removable, and slip-on shoes that can be taken off and put back on quickly. If you're traveling with children, use a stroller you can open, close and lift onto a security belt with minimum effort.

Helping Hand

Even sophisticated travelers rely on the expertise of others. A good travel agent can offer years of experience and contacts that are invaluable. Find one who understands your traveling tastes, and you'll save both time and money.

Speak Up

If you're dissatisfied by any aspect of your hotel, don't hesitate to let someone know. A good hotel does its best to rectify problems. If that doesn't work, send a letter to the hotel's general manager, with a copy to "Zagat Survey, Customer Satisfaction."
