I can't believe STARBUCKS got first place in best coffee it is the most bitter burnt tasting tar I've ever tasted in my life. The only way I can try to palate this sludge is to drown it in frothy milky latte. Anyone who has tasted real coffee would prefer the extra dark and sweet turkish coffee left to burn on a stove. your critic needs to find a new career

Hi John, As a Narb I refuse to drink that sludge. Give me a WAWA kona anyday.

Did these people have to choose from a limited list or what? I would take a Carls Jr burger over almost any of the other places mentioned, even over most of red robin's.  I prefer their fries, or Arby's over the other place as well. I am hooked on InNOut though, but more because of their animal fries. And what about Whataburger, I drove through Texas this past summer with my dad and brother. We stopped by and it was disgusting. We went because our dad grew up with it saying they were the best. We almost left without finishing, even my dad was disappointed. Was Coffee Bean and option? How about Robeks? I can't stand Jamba Juice. Will buy a smoothie from them only if I can't find Robek's within 10 miles. And sandwiches, I gotta kick out Subway and take Blimpie's, at least they slice the meat right in front of you instead of pulling it out of some container.

What about Mexican fast food? Hopefully Zagat will add best taco and burrito categories in the next survey.

Five Guys Burgers should have been on the list somewhere - they have the best fast food burgers on the East Coast. Plus they are the best value because you get a bag full of fries (similar to In-N-Out but these are better!).

Hey. I have had very good and very BAD experiences over the years with fast food emporia nationwide. One of the best is fairly recent. In Lake Success, a town hard by the New York City (Queens) border, there is a branch of Baja Fresh, Mexican food that was never frozen, never put in a microwave oven, made fresh when you order it, and quite good. Okay, there are Mexican restaurants that BURY Baja Fresh, but at much higher prices. If what you want is very good uncomplicated Mexican food and fast, this is the place. I understand they have several others, but this one is the closest to me, a scant three miles from my house. I submitted their name and address to the main Zagat survey, but have not seen it listed there. Regards, Bernie

I was a Subway franchisee for 17 years so I feel I am qualified to comment on fast food. Subway was doing test marketing to improve its offerings over the past 20 years, especially beginning in the late-nineties when they hired a marketing pro from Burger King. There was always a struggle between quality food and prices. The franchisees never wanted to pay more than $3 a pound which caused some quality issues for steak, chicken, and turkey. However, I believe Subway offers the best bang for the buck, especially with its $5 footlongs and Meal Deals.
I had dinner(s) tonight at Culvers. Since I missed lunch, I had the pot roast and chopped steak dinners, both good values at $5.99, although the chopped steak is basically a greasy butter-burger topped with onions and mushrooms. They have really good salads for about $6.50 and a fairly extensive menu including custard and lemon-ice desserts with fruit and sludge toppings. Great crinkle-cut fries, too! They are out of Wisconsin with a strong presence in Chicago. The one I go to is in The Woodlands, Texas. I like McD's coffee, Egg McMuffins and Burritos, too, plus Chipotle's Chicken Fajita Burrito -- it's the BOMB!

    I hate when that happens!

Hi Barbara, wawa's best coffee in the past 20 yrs was kenya AA, they took it off the market, then the next best was dark roast , they just took it off the market but now they have introduced a S. American organic which is quite good unlike their bitter Columbian.

What about Tim Horton's? their coffee is the BEST!
Can't believe Cheesecake Factory was voted a good value. Yes, the food is good, but the prices are high.
Friendly's in my area are filthy.

Five Guys and In-N-Out have the best on their respective coast's. There burgers are both amazing, as are there fries. Five guys has better fries, but in-n-out has animal style

It's unfortunate that Zagat only surveyed in the USA. Otherwise I am certain that Lord of the Fries (Melbourne, Australia) 100% vegetarian fries, international sauces and burgers and nuggets that taste like meat would have made the cut. I was recently in Europe, home to the fast food "fritte" and I have to say that Lord of the Fries in Australia is significantly tastier and fresher. These guys should open up in the USA so that they can make it onto Zagat! It's not fine dining, by any stretch, but for fast food it's tasty and they use fresh produce.
