Jean Georges? Eleven Madison? Los Angeles?

posted by scottt5973 - on Oct. 10, 2009 at 2:06 PM
I'll be visiting Los Angeles in November and would like to take a good friend out for his birthday and am interested in a restaurant comparable to Jean Georges or Eleven Madison in Manhattan... you know the type: phenomenal food, exceptional service in a non-stuffy, gorgeous environment... a meal to remember! Please help.

Try Ortolan at 8338 W. 3rd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90048

Ortolan vastly overrated. Try Luques, Nobu (or the original Matsuhisa), Angelini Osteria, Melisse, or Josie.

I agree with DanaM on all counts. . in fact, think they are ALL better than JeanGeorge - one of the worst experiences I've had in NY. .

Any of these are better than Jean Georges:
Lucques, Josie, Nobu, Campanile, Melisse, Chinois on Main

honestly, there is no such thing as "phenomenal food, exceptional service in a non-stuffy, gorgeous environment... a meal to remember!" in los angeles. the old stand-bys are just that...old. michael's, valentino's. the new comers are staffed by part-timers who don't put in the care and expertise required to qualify for exceptional service. l.a. is a different place than new york in so many ways...this is just one of them. the restaurant scene is alive and well here, but in a much different way then nyc. better to search for innovations rather than a jean georges experience (which in my experience is inconsistent). perhaps, as has been suggested, nobu would be a good place to start. or sona. if you can get to northern california try french laundry or dry creek inn or cyrus.

Campanile is in Charlie Chaplin's old 1920's studio, next to La Brea Bakery. Very cool building, smart waiters, beautiful place. We were there three weeks ago and it was back at the top of its game. Mark Peel was hilarious and spent time talking food and wine with us.

Gjelina on Abbot Kinney is a more relevant LA experience, IMO. But not remotely Jean Georges style . I really dislike Melisse, so that's not one I would endorse.

I would skip Nobu, since there is a branch in NYC. Also, Matsuhisa was a huge disappointment on my last visit. I believe your friend would probably enjoy the tasting menu at Sona.

Providence on Melrose or Patina at the Disney Concert Hall...both have Michelin stars
