Zagat's "Fancy-schmancy" spiel above doesn't do the place justice. This is an AMAZING place to have a drink and some food if you like well-prepared food and drink (Note that Zagat doesn't call Chez Panisse 'fancy-schmancy'). The drinks are spirit-driven and very tasty. I recommend going off-menu and asking the bartenders to pick your drink for you. You pick the spirit - they pick the drink. The food is still really outstanding.

Hit it at the right time and it's a perfect place to peruse a drink list that can't be beat.

the bartenders really know their stuff but the food is more basic and less inventive than it used to be. service can be slow but that's because this is the place to go for an excellent cocktail.
