Something terrible has happened at this once-great Malaysian pioneer in New Haven. The attention to detail in the food preparation has dropped off completely; flavors are muddy and service is snappish. Unfortunately, Bentara has joined the growing ranks of expensive-yet-mediocre restaurants downtown.
More like a great neighborhood place than a dining destination. Food is excellent, decor and service only so-so.

And one can adjust the spiciness from mild through medium to "regular" [native] and on to hot and "chef hot". The latter is only recommended for those with the strongest tongues and gullets!
