First of all, everybody please get this in your heads.....! This is a Spanish restaurant not a Portugese one! The Basque region in Northern Spain is what this restaurant is named for! Paella is the best I've ever had, in Spain or the U.S., I haven't really tried anything else here, in the 3 going on 4 times I've been there because the Paella Valenciana is sooooo good! But this is Spanish (as in Spain) food!!!!!
I fail to undertand why anyone would imply this is a "portuguese" restaurant. Have we absolutely no idea where the Basque region (as in Casa Vasca = Basque) is?? SPAIN! The area portuguese restaurants are absolutley inferior in food preparation to the few authentic Spanish retaurants in the area (Casa Vasca, Fornos, Spanish Tavern). Look at a map America. The food at Casa Vasca is good. Gema is a wonderful hostess. Fornos is #1 though.
Generous portions at reasonable prices. Decor is pleasing, but space is at a minimum as tables are close together. Waiters always present, but seem annoyed when asked to prepare your dinner as you want it. Our party included 10 people, and the final cost was $230.00, not including tip. Final note- if you reserve a table, get there well beforehand, as there is always a large crowd waiting outside, and you will lose your table if you come late.
This is a very nice, no attitude, down to earth restaurant. They serve some Basque dishes like 'chipirones a la plancha' (baby squid), Cigalas (langoustines) and others. Paella is definitely good and fat better than Fornos or any other Portuguese place in the Ironbound, though they also have many excelent Portuguese dishes as well. Service is attentive and cordial and prices are great. Do not miss it. Enjoy the experience of The Ironbound.
the best seafood is here. The sauces are to die for. nice people and great food.
