Food is nice but not Indian and it is too expensive.

Fourteen dollars for one samosa? Tabla gives new meaning to the small plate concept. The food is still excellent, the space is elegant, the tables set well apart, but parsimonious portions and waiters with attitude detract from the experience. You leave shaking your head at New York chutzpa rather than feeling fed.

Service was awful and indifferent – when the waiter even bothered to come by. Sat for 30 minutes before drinks were served. Waiter seemed to intentionally walk slowly at all times, and avoid eye contact so he wouldn’t be troubled having to do anything. Food is very good. Decor nice. But why bother when there are so many equals with much better service. No wonder on a Friday night they didn’t even turn the tables over once.

I'm surprised everyone thinks Tabla is expensive - we found it quite reasonable compared to restaurants of similar quality. It's also not fair to call it Indian - more "Indian-inspired" - a subtle reminder of Indian flavors, but basically innovative American. The one truly authentic Indian component is the fresh-baked bread, which is superb. Excellent wine list too, with some real bargains. Food portions are small but surprisingly filling.
