Usually check Zagat for reviews and unfortunately didn't do so before this horrible visit. Have traveled to NYC frequently and have never been to the Tavern. I don't get the reputation of this place. It was one of the most mediocre, high priced meals ever experienced. Heard so many good things about the decor, establishment, etc. As a few reviewers noted-a Liberace nightmare and a joke on tourists is on point. Don't waste time or money.
Recently, my husband and I had the opportunity to be in the city for the Kandinsky exhibit at the Guggenheim. We decided to make the evening 'memorable' by having dinner at Tavern on the Green. It is heartbreaking that this NYC Landmark will be closing its doors this year. We are among SO MANY patrons that want to say THANK YOU, for providing us with wonderful food, service, decor and a memorable evening we will never forget! THANK YOU
The only time I would go here is for the Christmas season. The carolers, music quartets, nutcrackers on stilts and countless staff in period costumes make this like Disneyland. It is expensive, and frequently not good or friendly, but in spite of it all, it is still magical. If you expect very average food, and slow service you can relax and enjoy the amazing decor.
Look at it from outside. The food was fair and the service, poor. An old-fashioned system--a captain, waiters, and someone who brings the food to the captain's stand. Waiters and captain were uninterested in us, let alone do anything to help us enjoy the experience. The waiter brought our drinks and was shocked when I said he brought me the wrong wine. He kept questioning me, as if I didn't remember what I ordered. Decor, nice years ago now tacky
