Closest thing I found to a NYC deli in the DC area.
I went there this previous Sunday we sat there for 15 minutes waiting for the waitress to take our drink order. It took another 15 minutes to get her to come and take our food order... when ordering, we asked about bun ingredients because of a severe allergy issue. She had no clue, neither did anybody else working there. Don't expect Kosher from this deli... the staff are as far away from Jewish as you can get.
This is the perfect restaurant for a hunger strike. The staff will not just ignore you, they will pretend you are not there. The manager does them one better -- he ignores your pleas for 30 minutes while cobwebs slowly grow around your elbows and your eyes grow pale and hollow with hunger. I lived in the Soviet Union once. The service at Chutzpah is worse. Much worse. The chutzpah to say they are Zagat rated! Zagat should sue.
Most so-called delis in this area serve pastrami and corned beef that's a joke. Chutzpah's is the closest to what you'll find in NYC. However, it could come out hotter and moister. I give the matzo ball soup a thumbs up. It has lots of stock (shredded white meat chicken, carrots and celery). Also, the food is reasonably priced.
We've been going to Chutzpah -- both in Fairfax and the newer one at Tysons -- for years and the corned beef is the best reason to keep going back. It's as good as anything I have had at Katz's or 2nd Avenue Deli in NYC. My husband raves about the tongue, also -- not something easy to find in NoVA. The matzoh ball soup and latkes are nothing special -- but the soup of the day sometimes shines and the corned beef on rye is always great.
