It's probably been 10 years since I last ate at Pesce. I'm glad I went back. One of the hardest things to get right in a seafood restaurant is a soft shell crab. Easily ruined by overbreading or pairing with unnecessary sauces/chutneys/etc., Pesce avoids the fru fru and serves up a softie that is pure unadorned crab bliss - a gossamer crispness that borders on perfection. Wine list is chock full of bargains.

If despite the Great Recession you still possess the wherewithal , run, don't walk, to Pesce. The freshest fish in DC expertly prepared. Everything on the menu is delicious but go for the whole Branzino when it's available.

If you want your seafood any fresher, carry a rod & reel! The most amazingly fresh seafood simply & elegantly prepared. For me, it's not a trip to D.C. unless I eat here. I once observed a cretin mutilate a soft shelled crab - having no idea on Earth what to do with it. The owner was gracious enough to tell her staff to bring him some crab cakes. A lovely person running a lovely establishment.

Liked the original, crowded, hot, location with the fresh fish counter in view better, but this upscale version still delivers great fish dishes.

Best DuPont fishhouse -- noisy new digs -- their whole grilled fish can't be beat.
