It's seldom that a great restaurant can keep its standards up for more than 30 years as Zalacain has. However, the excitement of innovation is now gone.
Zalacain is alas, a very good restaurant but not a world-class experience. Pricing is actually reasonable for the quality of food and the service was friendly, but not overly helpful. The outstanding entree of the evening was the steak tartare and try the chocolate volcano for dessert. The wine list was extensive and fair. If you go thinking "elegant continental", you will be fine. If you think "haute cuisine", you may be disappointed.
I have had the good fortune of eating in many of the world's finest restaurants, and I can't remember EVER being in a more beautiful space. The silver, china, and flowers are among the best, and the service was excellent, almost flawless. My wife and I commented there wasn't a better restaurant in New York or all of the US; a handful as good, but none better.
service is excellent. The food is over-rated. at the most a michelin two star restarurant.
