Boston's Top Restaurant & Food News of the Week

By Scott Kearnan
June 13, 2014

Since it soft opened for cocktails and breakfast at the beginning of the month, things have been pretty quiet from King St. Tavern, the replacement to Woodwards at the upscale Ames Hotel. But we sussed out the supper plans, which should roll out within another week or so. Apparently the (rather curious) concept is for a set, four-course prix fixe that involves bruschetta, soup, salad, and a protein of some kind or another. More here. [Zagat Boston]

Some interesting new openings this week. Among them: Brass Union, a new American tavern-meets-game lounge where you can swig cocktails while playing Pac-Man; Cathedral Station, an anticipated South End gay sports bar from much of the same team behind the storied 30-year old spot Fritz; and The Bancroft, pictured, an "urban steakhouse" in the suburb of Burlington from James Beard-nominated chef Mario S. Capone. And sort-of-new, reports Boston Restaurant Talk, is Roost Bistro, replacing Newbury Street's The Creperie. [Boston Restaurant Talk; Zagat Boston]

And in the coming soon department, Eater dug up that Mu Ramen is coming to Harvard Square. The NYC food truck (and soon-to-be restaurant) from Per Se alum Joshua Smookler and his wife Heidy shared via social media that their popular ramen concept will open up in Cambridge next summer. Also making a (considerably closer) expansion into Cambridge is Lone Star Taco Bar; the Allston favorite is seeking a liquor license transfer from Lizzy's Bar and Grill in East Cambridge, reports Boston Restaurant Talk. [Boston Restaurant TalkEater Boston]

Former Clio chef Douglas Rodrigues has moved over to The Tip Tap Room, and Boston magazine has an interesting interview with him. Food scene followers might note this is Rodrigues' first gig since he was fired from Clio after stabbing a coworker in the thigh while demonstrating how to use a folding knife; Rodrigues says the incident was an accident, and is awaiting trail on charges of assault and battery. He talked openly with B-mag about the incident, and is candid about his plans for the future: opening his own restaurant. [Boston Magazine]

Boston really, really likes Top Chef. Or maybe just being on TV. Probably both, because The Boston Globe reports that Bostonians temporarily crashed the show's Gmail account when responding to a casting call to serve as diners on an upcoming episode. 16,000 emailed and only 75 were chosen - which, when you think about it, means they beat way bigger odds than the actual winning contestant will. Take that. [The Boston Globe]

Toro and Coppa chef Jamie Bissonnette appeared on WBUR for a fun, insightful little interview about his career - and how his time playing in high school punk bands wound up becoming his foray into chefdom. We won't spoil the details, but here's a quote to whet your appetite: "In the town I grew up in, everybody thought I would be in jail by now, or dead. And if I hadn’t discovered cooking, it probably would’ve been true.” You can listen to the full conversation here. [WBUR]

In the wide world of round-ups, we gathered up a slew ideas on Where to Watch the World Cup in Boston, and cast the net wide to find Where to Find Father's Day Specials. But meanwhile, Zagat's Best Summer Ever rolled on with a look at the Best Outdoor Dining in 12 Boston Neighborhoods, a cross-city guide to al fresco options like B&G Oysters in the South End, Tres Gatos in Jamaica Plain and Cafeteria in the Back Bay. And if you happen to be hankering for a bite of some classically New England fare, we found 7 Hot Lobster Dishes - including a few creative permutations. (Lobster cupcakes? Thanks, Empire.) And finally, a little something for day trippers: Where to Eat & Drink in Newport, a guide to hot restaurants in the toniest town on the Rhode Island coast.
