Food Events This Week: Charity Dinner with Andrew Zimmern, Tiki Beer CocktailsBy Scott Kearnan
June 9, 2014
Monday. This month, South End newcomer Wink & Nod launched a weekly Tiki Night series, industry-baiting bashes that will recur every Monday. Each installment features guest bartenders, signature tropical drinks, island-inspired bites and, most likely, grass skirts and Tom Selleck mugs. Get into the kitsch starting at 5 PM, though you'll need to wait until 11 PM for the weekly guest bartender. Tonight, that's Narragansett Brewing Company's Peter Boyd; the beloved, bearded barman will imbue the spirit of tropical islands with a little bit of Rhode Island, serving up some creative Narragansett-infused beer cocktails.
Tuesday. Have extra cash to put to a good a cause? Pop by a special Pop-Up Charity Dinner at the New England Center for Arts & Technology on Tuesday, June 10 from 6-10 PM. Tickets ($300 here) are still available for the evening, where you'll have a chance to pull up a seat with celeb chef Andrew Zimmern; he's joining fellow James Beard winner Jamie Bissonnette (Toro, Coppa), Joanne Chang (Flour, Myers + Chang), and Matthew Jennings (just-closed Farmstead Inc. and soon-to-open Townsman) to prepare a four-course, wine-paired dinner to benefit local food rescue organization Lovin' Spoonfuls. Still want to help, but less to spend? Drop $75 for a cocktail party from 6-8 PM with a chef meet and greet, wine and Peak Organic beers, and hors d'oeuvres from chefs Louis DiBiccari (Tavern Road), Josh Smith (Moody's Delicatessen), and Michael Scelfo (Alden & Harlow).
Wednesday. If you haven't heard of The FareTrade, here's the deal (and take notes for future gift ideas for your favorite foodie): The "culinary membership" club lets you subscribe to monthly-delivered boxes of artisanal ingredients, with each assortment curated by a different chef. On Wednesday, June 11 at 6:30 PM, West Bridge toque Matthew Gaudet will host a special dinner to spotlight how some of the various FareTrade favorites can be used. (Tickets $65; $120 to include a FareTrade subscription.) On the list of ingredients: honey habanero pepper sauce, smoky sherry onion compote, and many more artisanal edibles. Call ahead to reserve: 617-945-0221.
Thursday. Speaking of making smart use of local food buys, local chef and cookbook author Julia Shanks recently updated and re-released her cookbook The Farmer's Kitchen: The Ultimate Guide to Enjoying Your CSA and Farmers' Market Food. It's chockfull of ideas, but if you need a little live inspiration, head to Evoo on Thursday, June 12. From 5-10 PM the Cambridge restaurant will welcome Shanks as a guest chef, and offer a special a la carte menu of dishes straight from the cookbook.
