Snow Specials in BostonBy Scott Kearnan
January 2, 2014
Neglected to stock up on bread, milk and beer? (Priorities, people.) Fear not. It's a snowstorm out there, and expected to get stronger overnight; but there are still a number of spots that are staying open to serve dinner tonight and tomorrow. We've pulled together a short list of spots around town that are doing something special during the storm: cutting prices, adding specials, or otherwise offering an additional incentive to wander out in into the white wonderland.
BoMA. Boston 30 Under 30 honoree Ryan Kelly has something special in store for his South End spot tonight. The chef is serving up a "Snow Bliz Special" — and dropping down some prices. All draft beers are $5, and all burgers and flatbreads are priced at $7.99. He'll also be offering a hearty surf & turf plate ($24.99) and a stick-to-your-ribs shrimp or chicken risotto with winter veggies and finished with truffle oil ($15.99).
Boston Chops. Brave the white sea of snow and saunter up to the bar at the South End steakhouse, where tonight and tomorrow they'll offer $1 oysters from 4 PM until close.
Craigie on Main. Chef Tony Maws is delivering a pleasant "Snowstorm Surprise" prix fixe tonight. The four-course, $45 menu includes the house-made terrine (one of the best things we ate this year), steaming soups and juicy roast chicken. You'll also find some special hot cocktails: including a rum punch and spiked coffees.
Davio's. Have a weather app on your phone? Show it to the bartender; whenever temperatures dip below 32 degrees, an order of spring rolls (from shrimp cojita to buffalo chicken) are on the house.
East End Grille. The snow slows everything down, but get there by 6 PM for half-priced apps from the dinner menu.
Estelle's Southern Cuisine. Given that it's freezing out, chef Eric Gburski saw fit to add something spicy for tonight and tomorrow only: the "Sloppy Poe Boy" ($11.95) a "wicked hot sausage" in tomato sauce with cheddar cheese and onion.
Lolita. The Back Bay Mexican tweeted a deal for tonight: mention "snow day special" and you'll get 20 percent off your food.
Prezza. Chef Anthony Caturano has sound the alarm: a "Snow Emergency Special" is available tonight. Order a glass of Chianti, and you'll get a complimentary gnocchi bolognese appetizer (pictured).
Puritan & Company. Chef Will Gilson is adding a "Snow Day Prix Fixe" tonight and tomorrow. The four-course, $40 dinner includes carrot salad with goat feta and amaranth; citrus-poached lobster; lamb assiette with potato puree; and a citrus tart to finish.
Tres Gatos. Trudge over to Jamaica Plain's cozy neighborhood tapas spot, and you'll be greeted with free coffee to warm you up.
U Burger. If you stop by today, save your receipt. If you spend at least $5 on Thursday, bring it back (to the same location) tomorrow or Saturday to receive 50 percent off your next order.
Union Square Donuts. Today the Somerville donut haven will launch two new heavenly flavors: chocolate marble glaze and an old fashioned cake donut. Come in to try, and you'll get a free small coffee or hot chocolate with a purchase of $10. (You'll need to mention their Facebook post about the promo.)
