Dallas' Hottest Bars

By Valerie Jarvie
December 11, 2013

The holiday season is upon us, and we're sure that with so many festive celebrations in your near future, you'll need a bar suggestion or two (or maybe just a stiff drink after too much family time). Lucky for you, in our fair city there's no shortage of craft cocktail makers and beer selections that are as carefully planned as wine lists. So pull up a chair at these hottest gathering spots in town, and who knows, you might just have enough liquid courage to get under the mistletoe.

  • Cedars Social

Covering both drinks and eats with aplomb, this cocktail den and kitchen puts out a daily-changing menu of top-notch new American dishes. The bar menu includes seasonal cocktails as well as era-inspired drinks; the old-fashioned is made with a Buffalo Trace whiskey custom-blended for Cedars Social. The bar was nominated for a James Beard Awards Best Bar Program in 2013.

    1326 S. Lamar St., 214-928-7700

  • Standard Pour

This McKinney Avenue venue with a New Orleans feel and streetside porch specializes in “Prohibition-style” drinks made with classic spirits, housemade bitters and fresh-squeezed juices, plus a menu of shared plates, brunch and American fare. Warm brick walls, a rustic wood bar and cozy furnishings with art nouveau accents complete the scene.

    2900 McKinney Ave., 214-935-1370

  • Meddlesome Moth

Shannon Wynne’s spacious Design District beer den features more than 85 bottle selections and 40 draft beers complemented by a menu of elevated pub fare (Prince Edward Island mussels, rabbit pot pie, fish 'n' chips) with pairing suggestions. Rare tastings and special-event dinners provide opportunity for deep hops study; the convivial vibe under a stained glass triptych of rock 'n' roll icons makes it a fun hangout, no matter how seriously you take your beer.

    1621 Oak Lawn Ave., 214-628-7900

  • NYLO Soda Bar

For drinks with an extraordinary view, it’s hard to beat this chic poolside watering hole atop the NYLO Dallas South Side. The lobby bar in the boutique hotel below offers additional trendy space to lounge, dine and imbibe.

    1325 S. Lamar St., 214-421-1080

  • Smyth

A secret spot to indulge in whatever you’re in the mood for today, bar staff at this hard-to-find unmarked speakeasy will ask your preference and custom concoct a beverage to suit. Low-lit, with comfortable midcentury modern furnishings and reservations-only admission, it’s a cocktail hideaway worth seeking out by the team behind Cedars Social.

    4513 Travis St., 214-520-0900

  • People’s Last Stand

Now open for two years, this Mockingbird Station cocktail specialist has won a serious following for its seasonally changing menu of well-executed drinks featuring housemade juices, bitters, syrups and infusions, complementing bistro fare and frequent special events, such as an annual bus tour of craft cocktail hot spots.

    5319 Mockingbird Ln., 214-370-8755

  • Savor Gastropub

The shiny new LEED-certified restaurant venue in Klyde Warren Park boasts a bar that’s a marvel in its own right. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls and two outdoor patios afford a superb view of the park’s activities and water features. An eco-friendly keg wall stores 12 craft beers and 16 wines on tap, accompanying a menu of craft cocktails and American fare by chef John Coleman, a veteran of Ritz-Carlton kitchens. There’s beer and wine to-go too at the ancillary kiosk, Relish, for those who want to carry their beverage out to the green space.

    2000 Woodall Rodgers Fwy., 214-306-5597

  • Truck Yard

This Lower Greenville beer garden and truck park, the brainchild of Twisted Root Burger Co.'s Jason Boso, features funky bar stations (including a converted Airstream trailer and a tree-house bar), an 18,000-sq.-ft. shady gravel space with patio furniture, a performance stage and a kaleidoscope of trailer-park-chic decor. Rotating food trucks, a permanent shed turning out grilled Philly cheesesteaks, 30 beers on tap and bottled cocktails fuel the crowd.
