6 Alternative Valentine's Date Ideas

By Amber Ambrose
February 3, 2014

Valentine's Day doesn't have to be chocolates, wine and roses. It can also be whimsical, shared with friends as well as significant others, or just plain quirky. If you forgot to make reservations or are just looking for something outside of the box of chocolates, here are six ideas that range from a science lecture inside a museum (with dinner) to a fun evening of beer and taco truck fare. The possibilities are endless, but this should give you a head start for the big weekend ahead.

  • Dim Sum Feast

    Fung's Kitchen
Great for: Celebrating Valentine's a day or two late (dim service is on Saturday and Sunday mornings only)
What to order: Everything! Ok, maybe just some dumplings, sticky rice, chicken feet, Chinese broccoli (to balance out all those starches and proteins) and whatever else looks good when they swing the cart by.
It will set you back: It depends on how much lands on your plate. Expect at least $20 a person.

    7320 Southwest Fwy.; 713-779-2288

  • Making a Statement

    Cuchara
Great for: In their own words, "singles, couples and threesomes," but also for those wanting to show their support for marriage equality by wearing bow ties in honor of the Tie the Knot organization
What to order: Picaditas (corn cakes with refried beans, creme and cheese), potato taquitos with green salsa, the salsa trio, and hibiscus flower and cheese tacos to share
It will set you back: $75 with a few cocktails

    214 Fairview St.; 713-942-0000

  • The Science of Love

Houston Museum of Natural Science Sugar Land
Great for: Science nerds - there will be a presentation about gemstones from HMNS president, Joel Bartsch, plus time to browse (or canoodle in) the exhibit halls. Make reservations here
What to order: No need to order, there will be a three-course meal with a cocktail reception and wine
It will set you back: $150 per non-member couples, $130 for members

    13016 University Blvd.; 281-313-2277

  • An Interactive Dining Experience

    Korean BBQ at Nam Gang
Great for: Groups of singles, double dates
What to order: Zucchini pancakes and spicy pork for the grill with soju (a Korean rice liquor) to drink
It will set you back: Around $25 a person

    1411 Gessner Dr.; 713-467-8801

  • The Great Outdoors

West Alabama Ice House & Tacos Tierra Caliente Truck
Great for: Beer drinkers who enjoy the outdoors and don't mind walking across the street for quality taco truck fare
What to order: Beer and tacos (duh)
