8 More Local Chains We Love in Houston

By Amber Ambrose
January 20, 2014

Houston is lucky to have an abundance of local chains that keep us fed all over town (and some all over the state). For this list we've defined local as based-in-Houston and not expanded past state lines. As for the chain - it'd need to be a minimum of three locations to meet our criteria. You may recall our original list of H-Town's favorite local chains, but there were so many to highlight that we decided to create a second edition.

  • Three Brothers Bakery

The formula: A family-owned and operated bakery serving up breads, cakes, cookies and traditional Jewish baked goods
Number of locations: 3, with the newest opening up on Washington Avenue this year
Cookie costs: $1.95 for Hamantaschen cherry (made year-round), 95-cents for oatmeal
Menu highlights: Loaves of challah, pumpernickel and rye
Good to know: Plenty of kosher baked goods are available, as are traditional pies during the holiday season

  • Barnaby's

The formula: Neighborhood restaurants with fresh, American fare and large portions
Number of locations: 6 total, with one breakfast-only outpost
Lunch for one: $11 to $17
Menu highlights: Sausalito chicken crunch salad, Hawaiian pork chops
Go for: A casual lunch date with your significant other

  • Black Walnut Cafe

The formula: Casual American fare with a gourmet touch, plus counter service and a full bar
Number of locations: 7, with more on the way
Lunch for one: $12 to $15
Menu highlights: Lobster Benedict with poached eggs, bacon, lobster, English muffin and a cayenne citrus Hollandaise for breakfast; pot roast with mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables and a house salad for lunch or dinner
Go for: Group dining - counter-service makes it easy for everyone to pay their own check
Bonus: Happy hour is 7 to 10:30 AM for the early bird specials and 3 to 6:30 PM for the afternoon discounts on drinks and appetizers
Don't miss: Some creamy gelato for dessert

  • Treebeard's

The formula: Southern and Creole home cooking served cafeteria-style
Number of locations: 5 - all in the Downtown area
Lunch for one: $10 to $15
Menu highlights: Stuffed pork chops, red beans and rice, shrimp étouffée
Go for: A casual lunch with co-workers
You should know: They're not open for dinner

  • Hubcap Grill

The formula: Both traditional and wacky 1/3-pound burgers and fresh-cut fries, plus beer
Number of locations: 2, with a third recently announced for Kemah (the Downtown original does not serve alcohol)
Lunch for one: $10 to $12
Menu highlights: Sticky monkey burger with crunchy peanut butter, bacon, American cheese and grilled bananas
Go for: A night out with the family (and sit outside to enjoy the laid-back atmosphere) or a lazy weekend lunch

  • Capt Benny's

The formula: Casual seafood houses with plenty of fried platters and a boat-shaped bar
Number of locations: 6, including one in Austin
Lunch for one: $10 to $20
Menu highlights: Inexpensive Gulf oysters on the half shell, micheladas, fried shrimp and stuffed whole flounder
Go for: A weeknight dinner of seafood and cheap beer

  • Churrasco's

    The formula: Upscale Latin steakhouses
Number of locations: 4, with the latest one opening up just last month in the Memorial City area
Lunch for one: $15 to $25
Menu highlights: The famous churrasco center-cut beef tenderloin. It's like buttah. The tres leches is also one of the top in its class.
Go for: Date night, executive lunch or a special occasion

  • The Creek Group

The formula: Austin-inspired neighborhood bar and grills with plenty of outdoor space
Number of locations: 4 total - three bars and one BYO restaurant
Lunch for one: $13 to $17
Menu highlights: A slew of burgers and quality pub grub
Go for: A night out on the town with friends or a Sunday Funday adventure
Don't miss: Their crawfish boils when in season
