Houston's Best High-End Happy Hours

By Marcy de Luna
May 5, 2014

Some of Houston's finest restaurants serve up a mighty fine deal during happy hour. Spend the workweek enjoying discounted fare and a price break on drinks, and be home by 7 PM.

Kiran’s
Drink prices drop during happy hour, including $6 red and white wines by the glass, $3 beers and $7 cocktails like the Purple Basil Martini, made with vodka, triple sec and purple basil, plus a handful of other refreshing libations. There's also a deal on eats: for $5-$7, choose from the likes of bison, lamb, chicken or veggie sliders and chicken satay with peanut sauce. Happy hour is weekdays from 4-7 PM on the patio (4100 Westheimer Rd.; 713-960-8472).

Brennan’s
You won't soon forget the catchy happy-hour theme at Brennan’s: "Seven for Seven till Seven." All for just $7 apiece, sip select wines by the glass or order the Full Circle, which comes with one bottle of Amber and one bottle of Hefe beer. Pimm’s Cup and Pisco Punch are featured drinks on the cocktail list. Nosh on tasty bites like crawfish and poblano hushpuppies and the Chris Sitz BBQ crawfish waffle with cheese grits and Saint Arnold’s Beer aïoli sauce. The 777 happy-hour menu is available at the bar daily from 2-7 PM (3300 Smith St.; 713-522-9711).

Kata Robata
The large selection of rolls and appetizers, priced between $4-$9, mean you won’t go hungry with Kata Robata's happy-hour specials. Our picks are the spicy salmon roll and tuna tartare. Specialty cocktails are $11 and under, flavored sake is $6, hot sake is $4, 12-oz. imported beer is $3, Asahi draft is $5 and house wines by the glass are $6. But the drink deals keep on going. Daily drink specials include half-off glasses of wine on Mondays, half-off sake flights on Tuesdays and Wednesday is the bartender’s choice. Knock off 50% on Asahi draft on Thursdays and Saturdays, on Fridays the Asahi 1,000-ml cans are half-price and on Sunday, eat up with the specially priced $1 yakitori (Japanese charcoal-grilled chicken skewers). Happy hour is Monday-Saturday from 5-6:30 PM and Sunday from 12-5 PM (3600 Kirby Dr.; 713-526-8858).

Mockingbird Bistro
Your five bucks goes a long way at Mockingbird Bistro’s 5-5-5 happy hour. Kurobuta pork baby-back ribs and crab and mushroom fondue are among the $5 savory snacks. Raise your glass to $5 select wines and $5 cocktails like the lemon drop martini and hibiscus pisco sour. There's also two-for-one local brews. Happy hour is daily from 5-7 PM (1985 Welch St.; 713-533-0200).

Vallone’s
Handcrafted whiskey drinks, Prosecco, select wines by the glass and a list of thirst-quenching cocktails are just $5 each on the happy-hour menu, available at the bar and in the bistro at Vallone’s. With your drink order, throw in Vallone’s garlic bread and daily rotating list of bites, free. Happy hour is weekdays from 4-6:30 PM and Sundays from 5-9 PM (947 N. Gessner Rd.; 713-395-6100).

Fleming’s
Fleming's "5 for $6 'til 7" happy-hour bar menu features five cocktails, five wines by the glass and five appetizers for $6 each. We like to pair the $6 hearty prime burger with bacon with the $6 blueberry lemon drop for a deal that puts the happy in happy hour. The special runs daily from 5-7 PM (multiple locations).

La Griglia
Nothing short of a steal, get a discount on fare such as $5 meatball sliders, $5 risotto balls and $7 specialty pizzas. The $6 cocktails include a Cosmopolitan and skinny margarita. Select glasses of wine are $5 and beer is $4. Happy hour is weekdays from 3-7 PM (2002 W. Gray St.; 713-526-4700).

Osteria Mazzantini
Sit at the bar at this upscale Italian restaurant and enjoy top-quality offerings for just five bucks at the “5 for 5 at 5” happy hour. Five beverage choices and five rotating dishes are $5 each starting at 5 PM. We recommend the lamb meatballs and supplì (crispy risotto fritters). Wash it all down with $5 drinks like the Canton ginger liqueur and black currant margarita. Select bubbly, wines and beers by the glass are also $5. Happy hour is daily from 5-7 PM (2200 Post Oak Blvd.; 713-993-9898).

America's
The social menu, available at the bar, patio and lounge, is something to brag about. The food menu has $6 small plates such as lobster corn dogs, fish tacos and Cubano sandwiches, enjoy select wines by the glass and classic cocktails like the Moscow mule and whiskey sour for $6 and beer is just $2.50. Happy hour is daily until 7 PM (multiple locations).

The Palm
During prime time, this steakhouse offers five bites for half-off at the bar. For $6.95 or less, you can get an order of Nova Scotia lobster sliders, calamari fritti or prime steakburger sliders. Happy hour is Sunday-Friday from 5-7 PM (6100 Westheimer Rd.; 713-977-2544).
