The wave of third-wave coffee roasters inundating Los Angeles started with Intelligentsia, which opened its first West Coast roasting facility and uber-hipster coffee house in Silver Lake in 2007. Several Intelli alumni moved on to open their own roasteries (Handsome) and coffee bars (Go Get Em Tiger), and still other companies have decided to make LA home (Seattle's Caffe Vita opened this year, and Portland's Stumptown lands in Downtown LA soon).
Next up is Santa Cruz-based Verve, whose beans are used at places like Fix in Echo Park and Single Origin at Short Cake. According to Squid Ink, the company will open a roastery, cafe and retail space here within the next year. Although the company is keeping mum on the location, it's supposedly "connected to a really unique project in a landmark location." But when you see a Verve sign somewhere in the Arts District downtown, remember that it's just a training facility and tasting room. Plus, how much caffeine does one neighborhood need?
