Best Thing We Ate

Eat a French Fry Sandwich at The Pikey

By Lesley Balla
June 24, 2014

It's true, we adore the thrice-cooked fries at The Pikey. They are exactly what you want to eat while sipping beer or cocktails made with house gin at the West Hollywood gastropub. But now that we've tried the chip butty, basically a French fry sandwich, regular fries are just about ruined for us. An English staple traditionally comprised of French fries, butter, ketchup and bread, the chip sandwich — the word "butty" comes from the butter — is believed to originate in working class pubs. That's fitting for this spot, since it's only offered on the happy hour menu and costs only six bucks. Those thick-cut fries are piled high on a house-made roll with butter and, instead of ketchup, a sauce that's akin to Thousand Island with chopped up cornichons. The little bit of sweet and crunch is a perfect foil for the decadence within. It's a total guilty pleasure: so wrong it's right. You can always order a salad, if you must. We've seen other chip butties as specials around town over the years, but as far as we know, it might just be the only one regularly offered in LA right now. Get it while you can: The Pikey's happy hour runs daily from 4-6 PM.
