Plan Check's smoky fried chicken is the perfect remedy to calm any Friday the 13th fears, and anyone who thought Sawtelle was a trek is in luck: a bigger, sleeker location opens on Fairfax just above Beverly Boulevard tomorrow. This is Terry Heller and chef Ernesto Uchimura's second location for the gastropub, with a third on the way for Downtown LA early next year. This newest outpost has huge wall-size windows that open to the sidewalk, letting in tons of light and air to the former Vodvil space. Edison bulbs, cool steel beam light fixtures, a big two-sided bar, and big booths and communal tables welcome conviviality.
The menu is similar to the original - the fried chicken, the burger, the pickled eggs and chorizo - with a few new additions, like pastrami-peppered salmon with an everything bagel chip swirled with rich inky cream cheese, an ode to the neighborhood's Jewish roots, perhaps (pictured below). Another difference is barman Matt Biancaniello's cocktail program, so sips aren't your usuals, including things like Splendor in the Grass, made with aloe liqueur, agave, arugula and white truffle salt. There's plenty of beer and wines by the glass, too, and the bar stays open until 2 AM on weekends.
This stretch of Fairfax between Melrose and Beverly has picked up in the food and drink department considerably, and if you're craving a burger, it's a veritable vortex with The Golden State (voted best burger by Zagat readers two years in a row), Twins Sliders and Rosewood Tavern all adding their own spin. Of course, Animal still packs in carnivorous diners, and Canter's is, well, Canter's. Plan Check opens daily at 11:30 AM for lunch, stays open late every night, has happy hour daily from 3-7 PM, and offers bar bites menu during the last two hours of service every night. Hello, late-night pastrami poutine!
