Summer Picnics at Jar and Freddy Smalls

Summer isn't the only time chefs will roast whole pigs or throw barbecues, but we sure do see more of them going on this time of year. This Sunday, August 18, take your pick between a sit-down deal with Suzanne Tracht and Nyesha Arrington at Jar on Beverly Boulevard, and an outdoor parking-lot picnic at Freddy Smalls in West LA.

At Jar, the two Top Chef chefs (Arrington was on TC Season 9, and Tracht was on TC Masters) are roasting a whole Duroc pig for a prix-fixe feast, which includes summer melon and crispy pork belly; roast pig served family-style with long-cooked mustard greens, summer slaw and shelling beans; and banana cream pie for dessert. Cost is $55 per person, and reservations begin at 5:30 PM. Call the restaurant for your spot and more info (323-655-6566).

The Freddy Smalls parking lot becomes a backyard BBQ with all-you-can-eat roasted pork shoulder tacos, grilled corn on the cob, beer-steamed Maryland blue crabs, grilled tri-tip, and Texas toast with chimichurri. There will be DJs, plenty of cocktails and drink specials, oh, and an entire beer truck. The party starts at 2 PM. Tickets are $45, which can be purchased at the door or by calling the restaurant (310-479-3000).
