The Best Outdoor Dining in Miami

By Carissa Chesanek
June 9, 2014

While we might be eager to trap ourselves indoors on hot summer days, once night falls, we're ready to break free. Here are the 10 best outdoor dining destinations in our sultry city.

  • Michael's Genuine Food & Drink in the Design District

James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Schwartz whips up impressive New American comfort food inside, while diners vie for a coveted table outside, perched under lush greenery.

Must-Order: Duck confit with orange marmalade and spiced pumpkin seeds and the milk-chocolate peanut-butter candy bar with popcorn gelato.
Insider Tip: Get a reservation well in advance.

    130 NE 40 St.; 305-573-5550

  • Villa Azur in South Beach

The ultraromantic French-Mediterranean restaurant (tree-lined outdoor terrace, plush banquets) offers a reprieve from the typical SoBe craziness.

Must-Order: Tuna Pavé made with red bell pepper coulis and niçoise ratatouille.
Insider Tip: Get there right before sunset to grab the best seat.

    309 23 St.; 305-763-8688

  • Il Gabbiano in Downtown

The Italian go-to (and sibling of Il Mulino New York) boasts a large outdoor terrace with breathtaking Biscayne Bay views and equally impressive pasta.

Must-Order: Costoletta Alla Valdostana stuffed with pate foie gras, fontina and prosciutto.
Insider Tip: Weekend reservations are a must.

    335 S. Biscayne Blvd.; 305-373-0063

  • Cantina Beach in Key Biscayne

Miami's only oceanfront Mexican restaurant, the gorgeous all-outdoor venue at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne offers stunning views of the ocean from its laid-back, airy dining room.

Must-Order: Slow-braised chicken enchiladas with cheese and red guajillo or green tomatillo sauce.
Insider Tip: Ask the tequila master to suggest a pairing.

    455 Grand Bay Dr.; 305-365-4500

  • Red Fish Grill in Coral Gables

Secluded on its own private beach, the pretty seafood spot is surrounded by water, making the patio ideal for an intimate date.

Must-Order: Chilean sea bass with crispy sesame crust, ginger sushi rice and sake-soy-mirin reduction.
Insider Tip: The large terrace has plenty of seating, but the tables closest to the beach are the most date-worthy.

    9610 Old Cutler Rd.; 305-668-8788

  • SUGARCANE Raw Bar Grill in Midtown

You can always find a bustling (and attractive) crowd at the eclectic tapas spot, especially on the pretty patio lit with its celestial lanterns.

Must-Order: Eel sushi roll made with organic egg and toasted coconut.
Insider Tip: Save the mojito pitchers for happy hour and opt for one of the fruity Prosecco cocktails with dinner.

    3252 NE First Ave.; 786-369-0353

  • Sokya's in MiMo District/Upper East Side

Located inside an old warehouse, the interior of the New American venue is rustic, while the tucked-away outdoor terrace with sprawling greenery is the epitome of charming.

Must-Order: Porcini shrimp risotto with rice and grilled asparagus.
Insider Tip: Pounce early (or call beforehand) for a spot on the teeny terrace.

    5556 NE Fourth Ct.; 305-759-3117

  • Wynwood Kitchen & Bar in Wynwood

The eatery's outdoor patio doubles as a gallery, with eye-popping graffiti art by local street scribblers.

Must-Order: The Peppery Pepino cocktail with mezcal and cayenne pepper and baby octopus skewers with lemon-garlic mojo and black olives.
Insider Tip: Taste test new summer cocktails at 30% off during happy hour (Monday-Friday, 5:30-7:30 PM).

    2550 NW Second Ave.; 305-722-8959

  • Mister Collins in Bal Harbour

With floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Atlantic, the chic New American venue at One Bal Harbour is all-around spectacular, but nothing beats Sunday brunch on the oceanside terrace, with its comfortable shaded seating and warm beach breezes.

Must-Order: Jumbo lump crab benedict with sweet pepper and potato hash paired with a bottomless Bloody Mary.
Insider Tip: Be sure to make a reservation well in advance as brunch fills up quick.

    10295 Collins Ave.305-455-5460

  • Devon Seafood + Steak in Kendall

The exterior is just as sleek as the interior, with its rich tones, warm woods and cozy lighting, but the breezy ambiance and water views make sitting outside at the steakhouse the No. 1 choice.

Must-Order: Mesquite-grilled Wagyu flatiron steak with sweet-potato fries and chimichurri sauce.
Insider Tip: To snag a table sans reservation, stop in before the dinner rush.

    11715 Sherry Ln.; 305-275-0226
