Amanda Freitag's rehabilitated Empire Diner will serve its first customers starting with tonight's dinner, the first step in the Chopped judge's plan to get the historic kitchen back to a 24-hour neighborhood retreat. The all-American kitchen, closed since May 2010, introduces a revamped menu from Freitag that showcasing hearty dishes like French onion soup with bagel bread pudding croutons and a patty melt. We're also anxious to see how Freitag's Empire Burger served on brioche with cheddar and special sauce stacks up with the city's top offerings. The 75-seat culinary landmark also plans to add another additional 80 seats outdoors come spring time, though for now New Yorkers will be happy to enjoy the warm confines of the remodeled Airstream trailer-style space courtesy of Groundswell Design Group. For now, the celebrity chef's first solo outfit will open at 5:30 PM seven days a week, though lunch and breakfast hours are expected to be added in the coming months.
