Mission Chinese Likely to Reopen at New Location

Last night we dropped by Danny Bowien's Mission Cantina to load up on tacos and Micheladas (and, the rotisserie chicken, natch), and the James Beard Award-winning chef was in the house, handing out freshly made corn tortillas to folks waiting for a table.
He filled us in on plans for Mission Chinese, which has been shuttered since last year after building issues led to health code violations. While the original plan was to re-open at that address, Bowien confirms that they probably will move. Saying it would be "so expensive" to get everything in order at 154 Orchard St., he confirmed that he is scouting other location in the hood and recently came close to signing a new lease. No word yet on timeframe, but it sounds like it's at least a few months out.
For now, you can check out Bowien's version of Mexican cuisine at Mission Cantina, which he thinks is going well. He has been, however, a bit taken aback by New York's sense of urgency, where everything has to be perfect the second it opens. "People have to remember that I was doing Mission Chinese for years in San Francisco before coming here," he said. "Before this project, I never made tacos before."
