Reopenings: Cantina Avenida in Mt. Airy, Mainland Inn in Harleysville

By Danya Henninger
May 15, 2014

Two area restaurants are coming back in new incarnations this season. Here are two reopenings to look forward to in late spring and early summer.

Cantina Avenida
Chef-owners Edgar and Kim Alvarez are revamping both the menu and decor of their Mt. Airy pan-Latin. Formerly known only as “Avenida,” the new version will eschew the fast-fading app-entree format for a small plates menu. Food inspired by Edgar’s childhood in Guatamala will include crab nachos, mole fries and carnitas tacos, all $15 and under. Tablecloths are gone; in their place are bright colors and a lively atmosphere. Popular fresh-juice margaritas and mojitos will still be available, probably best enjoyed on the outdoor patio. Relaunch is set for Tuesday, May 27 (7402 Germantown Ave.; 267-385-6857).

Mainland Inn
After extensive renovations, Sloan Six is ready to reopen this countryside gem near her Quarry Hill Farm in Montgomery County. Originally slated for last fall, the revival of the space (closed since 2010) had stalled in part because the chef attached to the project bowed out. Now Six has signed on Ezra Duker, a Philly native who has experience at Morimoto Napa and The French Laundry. “Simple and straightforward” food is promised, made with ethically sourced meat and produce, much of it from Quarry Hill and the Inn’s own gardens. When doors open this summer, they’ll lead to more than 150 seats across three dining rooms, a downstairs bar and an outdoor patio (17 Mainland Rd, Harleysville).
