Hakkasan is inarguably San Francisco's most expensive and glitzy Chinese restaurant. So you can imagine our surprise upon discovering its brand new menu of weekday lunch specials that cost just $5.50 each. Pop in midday, share a few plates with a friend and you'll get a well-rounded taste through several regions of China - all while ensconced in the dining room's Chinois-inspired caging and cushy seats. Have a preview look at our favorite new lunch-time offerings in the slideshow below.

Start lunch with this Teochew dish from eastern Guangdong province: a congee (thin porridge) flavored with John Dory (a white fish), Chinese celery and shiitake mushrooms. Teochew dishes tend to be on the lighter and healthier side and this one falls in-step.

Crispy whole fried shishamo (smelt) are served with fried garlic and shallot. Eating a fish from head to tail can intimidate some diners but the flavor is very mild - like an upscale fish stick.  This dish would also make for a great bar snack with a beer.

You may not want to have a cocktail at lunch if you're heading back to the office and there's a list of non-alcoholic drinks to keep you quenched, sans booze. We like this Empress Cooler made with fresh strawberry, lemon, cranberry juice and lemon soda.

A savory taro cake hides chunks of flavorful Chinese sausage inside. These square-shaped mounds are steamed for a delicate flavor and consistency.

Tender pieces of roasted duck are stir-fried with dried chili in a sweet Szechuan sauce.

Five plump pork and shrimp dumplings come swimming in a delicious broth of Szechuan chili sauce, soy, garlic and black vinegar. Despite the angry red color of the oil the heat level is medium.
