Must Try: Black & Orange BurgersBy Rina Rapuano
October 22, 2013
Looking at all these Burger Week photos had us heading over to Black & Orange on U Street NW for a quick fix. Different flavors are mixed right into the patties at this late-night haunt, including the Now & Zen, which is blended with soy sauce, green onion, ginger and toasted sesame seeds.
We opted for the Curried Away, a mix of house curry, onion, cilantro and hot chiles, and the Ciao Down, formed with garlic, sun-dried tomato and basil. Burgers can be ordered "pink" or "no pink," and in quarter-pound ($5.95) or half-pound ($7.95) sizes.
We didn’t think barbecue sauce, ketchup or mustard were quite the right condiment for our well-seasoned burgers, so we stuck with lettuce and tomato, topping the curry burger with Provolone and the Italian-inspired burger with goat cheese. (Mozzarella isn’t an option.) It turned out that the patties were so juicy and the bun was so buttery that we didn’t need anything to keep it from tasting dry.
Our one wish is that we had opted for the half-pound patty instead of the quarter-pounder, since it got kind of lost in the bun. But when your biggest complaint is "more burger, please," you know you're in good hands (Dupont Circle, 202-296-2242; U Street NW, 202-450-5365).
