Just what the world needs – an R-rated food truck. Taking its cue from Saturday Night Live's NPR sketch, Great Balls on Tires does push the edge. Indeed, it's hard to say if this truck is kid-friendly or not. I mean, who wants to explain to their tween daughter that the truck's slogan, "Meat Our Balls," is a play on words and not an offer. Its other slogan? "Purveyor of Fine Balls."
The dishes are multicultural – and the puns relentless, whether it's the IncrediBall (ground Kobe, applewood smoked bacon, gruyere, wild arugula and garlic aïoli), the Ciao Balla (veal, pork, pancetta and shaved Parmesan), the Ball Mi (lemongrass pork, jalapeño, Vietnamese pickles and a cilantro-mint aïoli), the Ball Gogi (Korean barbecued beef with kimchi and Asian noodles), or the Ballywood (garam masala chicken with coconut madras chutney).
There's a special called the "Odd Ball" ("for the ballsy eater"), and also a "Guest Ball" – the first is being made by former Comme Ça chef Michael David. Dessert is called "Sweet Balls." Freud would probably have something to say about the meaning of it all. Or perhaps he'd just keep smoking his cigar.
