In an effort to combat pasta's bad post-Atkins rap, the World Pasta Congress of Rome (yes, there is such a thing) has deemed October 25 to be World Pasta Day. In its honor, we thought we’d take this opportunity to highlight some primo pastafarians in the following cities.

Labor Day means the symbolic end of summer (and for many, a return to school), but don't despair – the long weekend from September 4–7 is also a time to fly your foodie flag high.

The just-released New York City Food Lover’s Guide is packed to the gills with reviews and lists covering 1,970 food shops, florists and party sites, including 73 online shopping resources, at every price point. And with summer in high gear, what better time to take a look at the Top Ices/Fro-Yo around town?

1. Lemon Ice King of Corona

52-02 108th St., Queens; 718-699-5133

“Long live the King” chant the fervent fans of this Corona “treasure”, where “nuttin’ – I mean nothing – beats” the namesake lemon Italian ice, though there are a “zillion” other flavors to choose from too, all fabulous enough to make it “worth the wait”, especially on a “hot summer night”; “may it be there forever.”

2. Ralph's Famous Ices*

Multiple Locations

“Summer wouldn’t feel like summer” without a trip to the original 1949 branch of this Staten Island institution – or one of its ever-multiplying offspring – where “people flock” to enjoy “the best Italian ices” in the warm-weather months and the “line spills out to the street”; there are “so many flavors” (even no-sugar options for dieters) you’ll “want to try them all”, so “buy pints for home” while you’re at it.

2. Öko*

152 Fifth Ave., Brooklyn; 718-398-3671

Solar panels on the awning out front are the first clue that this Park Sloper isn’t your usual pinkberry knockoff: from its “easy-on-the-eye” interior constructed with “green” building materials to the “biodegradable” cups and spoons, it has a seriously eco-conscious bent; “oooh, so good!” is the verdict on its “tart” fro-yo made on-premises with Greek yogurt and crowned with “assorted fruit, nut or candy toppings”; N.B. it also pours 18 kinds of organic, Fair Trade tea and recently added a line of baked goods.

3. XL Carrots

1000 Third Ave., 7th fl.; 212-705-3085

Bloomie’s shoppers “stop to refuel” on “heavenly” fro-yo at this ’70s “original”, now “relocated to the seventh floor and expanded” into a full-service eatery but still best known for “beyond-generous” servings of its hallmark “creamy” “refresher” (the “tangy” “plain yogurt has no rivals to this day”); the sandwiches and light bites are likewise “perfectly decent”, though “spotty service” and “long lines” can make your “break” “a bit chaotic.”

4. Red Mango*

Multiple Locations

The “frozen yogurt that foodies like” is how devotees describe the goods from this member of the fro-yo fray, calling it a “great riff on the classic” stuff that’s neither too “sour nor too sweet”, has a “very creamy texture” and can be topped with virtually “anything”; the company “boasts of probiotic benefits”, but most are more focused on the “delicious” flavor and under-the-radar “buzz” that has meant “half the lines” of the competition.

4. Peaches*

2543 Broadway; 212-222-6228

A peachy addition to the Upper West Side dessert scene, this newcomer appeals to lo-cal locals with “delicious” fro-yo – tapped in “creative” fruity flavors and heaped “with fresh toppings” – supplemented with smoothies and coffee; a bright, “relaxing environment” with some casual seating, it’s sizing up “better than the rest” when pitted against the nabe’s big-name chains.

4. 16 Handles*

153 Second Ave.; 212-260-4414

A “compulsive’s” “dessert dream”, this “DIY” East Villager supplies all the fro-yo you can handle via “self-serve” taps dispensing 16 “high-quality” flavors (“fruity, tart, sweet – you name it”) and a “topping bar” with options to “fit every taste bud”; it’s a “favorite” among “young” folk who “love” the “gimmick” but warn “exercise a little self-control” or it gets “expensive real quick.”

5. pinkberry

Multiple Locations

Aka “crackberry”, this “genius” LA-based fro-yo chain has gained a cult following – and inspired a multitude of imitators – with its “addictive, tart, refreshing goodness”, topped with the “freshest fruit” or other “fun” offerings (“Fruity Pebbles, Cap’n Crunch”) and served in “creatively designed”, “mod” spaces; skeptics cite “sour taste”, “lax” service and “kinda pricey” tabs, but those “insane lines” that form “no matter what the weather” speak for themselves.

* indicates a tie

Memorial Day, May 25, is almost here, which means it's time for barbecues and trips to scenic vistas. But if you’re the kind who’d rather have someone else do the grilling, and aren’t looking to travel beyond your own city limits, we’ve got some suggestions for you.

The 39,000 runners who will compete in the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday get all the glory – not to mention the free water, flavored power gels and pasta dinners to keep them going. But what about the two-million-plus hungry and thirsty spectators who cheer them on all day? They need fueling too.

If you'll be playing cheerleader that day, here are 26 possible pit stops for noshing at strategic spots along the 26.2-mile course.

The Windy City is famous for a number of gastronomical delights ranging from deep dish pizza to Charlie Trotter's. But when push comes to shove, and it often does, our favorite Chicagoan contribution to world cuisine just may be the one that you can eat standing up: the Chicago-style hot dog. (For the uninitiated, it's an all-beef dog in a poppy-seed bun topped with mustard, onion, sweet pickle relish, dill pickle, tomato, peppers and possibly cucumber slices.) Whether you're a hot dog aficionado or just want to see what all the fuss is about, check out our Top Hot Dog/Burgers list fresh from the 2009 Chicago Restaurants guide.
“Gimme a charred red hot dammit!” demand respondents who relish the “funny, filthy-mouthed” “late-night” shtick (from customers and staff) as much as the “outstanding Chicago dogs” and “amazing cheeseburgers” at this “one-of-a-kind” Lincoln Park “sitcom-in-waiting”; still, be warned that “the love goes in the bun, not the decor”, there’s “almost nowhere to sit” and some say “never go here sober.”

We've already told you about London's Top Indian and Top Italian, but it isn't just with other cuisines that the city's chefs shine – they also excel at fare that's uniquely British. So if you've been looking for the Top Fish 'n' Chips in town, we suggest you consider these spots from our newly released 2009 London Restaurants guide:

Golden Hind

73 Marylebone Ln., W1; 020-7486 3644

If this Marylebone seafooder “feels like an institution” – it is: “since it opened in 1914”, it’s served “some of the freshest and best fish ’n’ chips” around; the “drab” decor’s enlivened by the “family atmosphere” and the “presence of an art deco fryer” (no longer used), so “the only negative is, no beer” (but “you can bring your own”).

North Sea

7-8 Leigh St., WC1; 020-7387 5892

A “long-time favourite for sit-down fish ’n’ chips” (“if the fish were any fresher, they’d swim”), this Bloomsbury seafooder “off the beaten tourist path” is a “simple place, but good for the basics”; the “dated decor isn’t so bad given the back-dated prices.”

Two Brothers Fish

297-303 Regent's Park Rd., N3; 020-8346 0469

“Simple”, “flavourful” fish ’n’ chips and a “friendly”, “busy atmosphere” make it “worth the schlep to Finchley” and this seafood “institution”; but “good luck finding a table” as “it gets packed early on with a lively middle-aged crowd” who blot out the “tired-looking decor” with bottles of the house white (“a local secret” from the namesake “two brothers’ own vineyard”).

Seashell

49-51 Lisson Grove, NW1; 020-7224 9000

It looks “nothing fancy” (“shabby” in truth) and “service is painfully slow”, but this Marylebone veteran offers the “quintessential London” experience of “perfectly fried fish accompanied by the typical” trimmings, like “top-notch chips” or “delicious mushy peas.”

Sweetings

39 Queen Victoria St., EC4; 020-7248 3062

The “unique old London fish-house atmosphere at this lunch-only City establishment” is “still packing ’em in after all these years” (120 to be precise); “expect elbow to elbow seating”, “waiters in white butcher’s aprons” and a seafood menu that’s “simple, but there’s no denying the quality”; however, they take no reservations, so “whether you can stand the wait is up to you.”

Legendary actor Paul Newman passed away over the weekend. Although best known as a movie star, he was also renowned as an entrepreneur/philanthropist thanks to his Newman’s Own brand of food products, which began as a line of salad dressing and grew to encompass everything from popcorn to lemonade to spaghetti sauce. All profits from this enterprise were donated to various charities, allowing him to harness his global fame for the common good. Not incidentally, he was also a racecar driver and even a restaurateur (Dressing Room in Westport, CT).

Ultimately, his legacy lies in his movies. As a tribute to his wide-ranging body of work, here is a list of 20 notable Newman films, rated and reviewed by our voters. It is excerpted from the 2009 Zagat Movie Guide.

"Newman and Field ignite the screen" in this "textured" "hard-hitting" courtroom drama demonstrating how "guilt by association" causes a "newspaper to ruin a man's career"; most say that the "irresponsible press" is a topic made for the movies, but some feel this "slight" effort "should have been better" – starting with the "not-believable ending."

"Make sure you know where all the exits are" before settling into this "big, bad '70s disaster" flick starring a skyscraper, a fire and a "rogues' gallery of great actors"; although the "passable" "special effects were top-drawer for its time", cynical sorts snort it's more of a "made-for- TV movie" by modern standards.

A "David-vs.-Goliath" legal struggle is the underpinning of this "underrated" courtroom drama about a "burned-out lawyer trying one last case to keep from going under"; Newman's "intense", "tour-de-force" turn is one of his "greatest" roles (leaving many "stunned" that the Oscar eluded him), while the "mesmerizing" Rampling "excels" as the love interest.

After one of the more vocal preservation fights in recent New York memory (even Tom Wolfe got in on it), the new home of the Museum of Arts and Design (née the American Craft Museum) will open on the southern tip of Columbus Circle tomorrow – and it's free to the public all weekend (10 AM–6 PM). Whether you like architect Brad Cloepfil's take on the famed "lollipop building" or not, MAD's new home with spectacular views of Central Park is worth a visit. It's got more than twice the exhibition space than before plus a new Tiffany-sponsored gallery for contemporary jewelry. But after seeing all of that craft, where to eat? After the jump, we pick a few nearby spots to pair with your museum-going (Wednesday and Friday–Sunday 11 AM–6 PM, Thursday 11 AM–9 PM; $15 per adult; $12 per student/senior; children age 12 and under are free; 2 Columbus Circle, NYC; 212-299-7777).

A Longer Lunch

The latest from the Blue Ribbon team provides a serene, woodsy setting to contemplate the art you've just seen, and its Japanese fare stands up well to its sibling's reputations.

356 W. 58th St.; 212-554-6000

Though it's no longer the epicenter of hip, the Hudson Hotel's restaurant still offers a stylish spot to sit back and think about MAD's exhibits. Its outdoor area is especially welcome on a warm day.

Landmarc

10 Columbus Circle, 3rd fl.; 212-823-9366

Though on the pricey side, Thomas Keller's cafe/patisserie offers a variety of high-end sandwiches and salads with a take-out area for those really in a hurry. And, there are few better views of the new MAD building than from the windowed front of the Time Warner Center.

Whole Foods Cafe

Yes, it's a food court/salad bar in a grocery store. But the quality and scope of its selections (from sushi to gazpacho and back again) makes it a no-brainer when your party can't agree on a cuisine.

There is just the hint of a chill in the air in London, meaning it's time to begin thinking about a hot cup of tea in the afternoon. Here's an assortment of new and old places to choose from:

Nicole’s: This restaurant in a fashion store has launched a new miniature afternoon tea (£16.50; £26 with a glass of champagne). Several other à la carte items are on the menu, including a "Saintly Option" (£6.95) – a gluten-free and 97% fat-free chocolate cake served with goji berries and pu-erh tea, reputed to be a thermogenic, which raises one’s metabolism to burn calories faster. Of course, there are also traditional scones (£3.95) available as well as lemon-and-ricotta fritters with chocolate sauce (£3.25). Tea is served from 3:30–6 PM (020-7499 8408).

Just St. James: Recently reopened after a makeover, the restaurant now offers all-day dining options in addition to lunch and dinner, including breakfast and afternoon tea. Add a glass of bubbly to the Royal Afternoon Tea and it's called the Veuve Clicquot Tea. Or for a smaller appetite, there's the St. James Cream Tea (020-7976 2222).

Sketch: You can also drop into The Parlour at Sketch (downstairs from The Gallery and the Lecture Room & Library) and do a little simultaneous WiFi web-surfing. Choose from Cream Tea (£9.50), Afternoon Tea (£19.50) or Champagne Afternoon Tea (£30); there is also an assortment of special teas selected by Pierre Gagnaire (9 Conduit St., W1; 020-7659 4500).

Of course, there are always the elegant hotel options such as the Pret-a-Portea served at The Berkeley – very timely since London’s Fashion Week comes to a close tomorrow. Tea is £35 per person (with an optional champagne supplement) and served from 1–6 PM (020-7201 1619).

The other legendary hotel tea is served at The Ritz. Just remember you need to book about six weeks in advance to avoid disappointment and follow the dress code of jacket and tie for men (£37 per person; £48 includes a glass of champagne; 877-748-9536).

A more unusual option is to be launched on Saturday at the famous perfumer
Miller Harris in Mayfair. While not a restaurant, owner Lyn Harris has carved out a lovely corner for a tea salon within the shop and has created a range of teas based on the natural essences used in her fragrances: The Bergamot, The Petales and The Fume (21 Bruton St., W1; 020-7221 1545).

If you enjoy a side of star-gazing with your meal, here are some restaurants to put on your must-dine list for the next time you're in London. After all, celebrities, like everybody else, need to eat sometime. Or at least pretend to. And the food at these places isn't anything to scoff at either.

Automat

33 Dover St., W1; 020-7499 3033

This Mayfair hot spot is a favorite of London’s rock royalty for the jazzed-up American menu and funky diner atmosphere. Mick and Jade Jagger, P. Diddy and Kate Moss are all fans.

Babylon

99 Kensington High St., W8; 020-7368 3993

Richard Branson’s restaurant at the Roof Gardens in Kensington is drawing a young and hip crowd including Kelly Osborne, Christian Slater and Meg Matthews. Visit the affiliated nightclub downstairs for extra star-spotting opportunities.

Geales

2 Farmer St., W8; 020-7727 7528

A revamp at this recently reopened old-time Notting Hill fish 'n' chip shop is pulling in a celeb-heavy clientele. Meryl Streep, Joan Collins, Jerry Springer, Brian Ferry, Justin Timberlake and Mariella Forstrup have all been to get their chip fix.

The Ivy

1-5 West St., WC2; 020-7836 4751

A gaggle of paparazzi is always hanging outside the door and a celebrity sighting is almost guaranteed at this Theatreland mainstay. Loved by luvvies, it also draws the A-list including the Beckhams, Tom Hanks, Ricky Gervais, Elton John and Tom Cruise.

J Sheekey

28-32 St. Martin's Ct., WC2; 020-7240 2565

Like her little sister, The Ivy, this peerless seafood restaurant is a celeb favourite. Customers include Brad Pitt, Pierce Brosnan, Orlando Bloom, Sienna Miller, George Clooney, Rupert Everett, Kirsten Dunst and Daniel Craig.

Madonna, Dame Judi Dench and Halle Berry have all visited this trendy Indian restaurant in Haymarket. The buzzing club atmosphere makes it the perfect venue for star-studded aftershow parties.

Nobu

Planning a solo trip to London this summer, or just looking to split off from your picky travel companions for a few hours? London has a fantastic range of restaurants where eating by yourself is a pleasure. Here are some of the best.

Arbutus

63-64 Frith St., W1; 020-7734 4545

This buzzing Soho eatery accepts reservations for a seat at the bar, making it a top spot for resolute solo diners. The Modern European food is decently priced and you won’t be restricted to house wine as most bottles are available in 250-ml carafes.

Barrafina

54 Frith St., W1; 020-7813 8016

There are just 23 stools surrounding an L-shaped bar at this popular Soho haunt. They don’t take bookings so lone diners will find it easier to snag a solo seat for tapas and one of the many sherries served by the glass.

Cha Cha Moon

15-21 Ganton St., W1; 020-7297 9800

Legendary restaurateur Alan Yau’s latest opening follows the format of Wagamama and Busaba Eathai with no reservations and large communal dining tables. If you find solitary dining a little quiet, you’ll be in prime position to indulge in a little eavesdropping or to join your neighbours’ conversations.

L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon

13-15 West St., WC2; 020-7010 8600

For French food in a dramatic setting, head to super-chef Joël Robuchon’s Theatreland restaurant. It offers countertop dining with plenty to entertain: great people-watching and a close-up view of the chefs at work in the open kitchen.

Moro

34-36 Exmouth Mkt., EC1; 020-7833 8336

Head to Exmouth Market where solo diners can grab a seat at the zinc-top bar without reservation. The full exotic Med menu is available at these seats, as well as a long list of tapas dishes.

Scott’s

20 Mount St., W1; 020-7495 7309

This old veteran has been given a striking refurb with an oval oyster bar as the focal point. Sit at the counter and choose your seafood from the magnificent 3-m.-long display in the middle of the bar.

YO! Sushi

Multiple locations

It may not be the fanciest Japanese in town, but you can’t beat this kitschy chain for quick and convenient eating. Grab a seat at the bar and help yourself to sushi from the moving conveyor belt.
