May the Fourth Be With You

Celebrating the Fourth of July in Boston gets to the heart of our patriotic roots. Here's a look at some restaurants joining the festivities with holiday specials and others that will be on holiday themselves.

Dante de Magistris, chef-owner of dante in Cambridge, heats up Fourth of July with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres on the patio overlooking the Charles River, followed a six-course American menu with a modern Italian twist served in the dining room. After dinner, partial views of the fireworks in Boston may be possible depending on the weather (6 PM cocktail hour, 7:30 PM dinner; $140 per person; 617-497-4200).

At the Copley Place Legal Sea Foods, bartender Dave Kauffman got a bang last year from his Red, White & Blue-jito – a mojito made with Ron Zacapa aged rum and striped with layers of grenadine and Curaçao. “They usually end up mixing together by the end of the drink,” said Kauffman. This year, he hasn't decided yet whether he'll resurrect the festive mojito or conjure up a few new themed beverages.

Perched 52 floors above the city, Top of the Hub in the Prudential Center has a front-seat view of the fireworks. The night begins with a half-hour of open bar, followed by a five-course prix fixe dinner that includes butter-poached lobster tail and beef tenderloin (7:30 PM; $200 per person; 617-536-1775).

And while the city sizzles, some restaurants take advantage of the holiday to shut down and give their staffs a break. Notable Fourth of July closures include: Aujourd’***, Da Vinci and No. 9 Park in Boston; B-Side Lounge, Chez Henri and Rendezvous in Cambridge; and Ashmont Grill in Dorchester.
