We've seen recent closings of upscale establishments including Excelsior, Great Bay and the venerable Four Seasons’ Aujourd’***, which may explain why a number of upcoming openings will focus on value, either with small-plates cuisine or more downscale concepts. In the North End, Nick Varano’s Famous Deli will feature New York bagels, corned beef, cold cuts and classic deli eats when it opens later this month, while Post 390, a casual American from the owners of Harvest and Grill 23 & Bar, is scheduled to open in The Clarendon condos in October with former Excelsior chef Eric Brennan helming the kitchen.
Which isn't to say this summer won't bring some glitz. Later in the season, the two-story restaurant and ultra-lounge Splash is slated to open at 150 Kneeland Street in the Leather District. Fashioned after a Vegas nightclub, the new concept, housed in the former News locale, will serve American small plates, and feature a roof deck with a fountain and luxury cabanas (617-426-6397).
Finally, the opening of Stoddard Fine Food & Ale has been delayed until September 1, when Downtown Crossing foot traffic picks up (617-426-0048).
