It's a Mod, Mod World

With exotic cocktails, premium sake (including flights) and loungey music, Niu Japanese Fusion Lounge, a hip Pan-Asian newcomer serving a moderately priced mix of classics (sushi, pad Thai) and fusion fare (seafood-stuffed fried jalapeños), seems destined to loosen up Streeterville locals. Its ultramod decor includes a half-moon sushi bar and birch forest mural; N.B. the set-price lunch and late-night bar menu are quite reasonable (332 E. Illinois St.; 312-527-2888).

The short menu at Wicker Park's new Su-Ra Korean Restaurant (no relation to Sura) is distinguished by its use of artisanal foods and seasonal – often organic – produce in classic dishes. With Asian scrolls decorating exposed-brick walls inside plus a small back patio, it exudes a modern, casual feel that befits the moderate prices (2257 W. North Ave.; 773-276-9450).
