In these tough economic times, it’s no surprise that restaurateurs are opening additional branches of time-tested spots rather than venturing out into uncharted territory with entirely new concepts. Here are some of the dining sequels expected to roll out soon as well as a few that have recently opened.
Bumpkin: A second location of this popular Notting Hill newcomer is scheduled to open 13th October in South Kensington on the former Abbaye site, where it will offer brunch, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner as well as its popular Sunday lunch (£27 for three courses and a cocktail). The space will have a farmhouse feel with sharing tables and an open kitchen; half of the tables will be reserved for walk-ins (102 Old Brompton Rd., SW7; 020-7341 0802).
Canteen: A third outpost of this traditional British restaurant opens mid-October in Marylebone in the former Marks & Spencer’s headquarters (55 Baker Street, W1).
Eat & Two Veg: A second location of this vegetarian spot has opened in Muswell Hill (291-293 Muswell Hill Broadway, N10; 020-8883 4503).
Ping Pong: This bargain-priced dim sum concept recently opened a branch at Bow Bells House (1 Bread St., EC4; 020-7651 0880), and another City venture arrives 21st October (3 Appold St., EC2).
Tapas Brindisa: This tapas purveyor is in major expansion mode with the recent opening of Tierra Brindisa in Soho, and unlike the Borough Market original, this one does take reservations (46 Broadwick St., W1; 020-7534 1690). Another offshoot, Casa Brindisa, opens in South Kensington in November and will feature a delicatessen and a jamoneria offering a full range of cured hams and charcuterie for eat-in or take away (7-9 Exhibition Rd., SW7; 020-7590 0008).
Vivat Bacchus London Bridge: This recently opened second location has a wine bar on the ground floor serving tapas, sharing platters and steak sandwiches, a 60-seat restaurant downstairs, and – just like the original Farringdon branch – a wine cellar and cheese room (4 Hays Ln., SE1; 020-7234 0891).
Wahaca: A second location of the cheerful cantina opens this November in the new Westfield London mall in Shepherd’s Bush, where executive chef (and TV personality) Thomasina Miers’ menu will continue to include Mexican classics as well as more unusual dishes. The design aims to reflect the character of Mexico’s street markets, and also includes an alfresco dining area.
