It has been a tough time for Gaucho Grill, but not quite as tough as some are making it out to be. Though its Santa Monica outpost has recently shut its doors for good, the Argentinian mini-chain still has two locations left: one in Brentwood and another in Woodland Hills.

Sonora Says "See Ya"

Sonora Cafe, the Southwestern sib of El Cholo, will shut its door tomorrow in La Brea (where it's been since leaving Downtown in 1994). A call to the restaurant revealed that the owner is looking to reopen in a new location, but that it won't be before 2009.

Paperfish Closed Today

In what may be a harbinger of hard times to come, high-profile über-chef/restaurateur Joachim Splichal (Patina Restaurant Group) closed his Westside seafooder, Paperfish, today, slightly less than one year after its much-heralded November 2007 opening. The restaurant's adjacent casual Market Café will be closing on November 14th. This shuttering is notable both because of its celebrity pedigree and its location in the midst of moneyed Beverly Hills. In a statement worthy of a campaign concession speech, Splichal issued a press release stating: "Much time, effort and creativity went into the foundation of the restaurant, but we had an option in our lease to return the space to our landlord, and with the current economic climate, it did not make sense to continue to foster this new concept." To which a local restaurateur (who asked to be unnamed) added, "I am afeared that this is just the beginning."

Goat Replaces Happi Songs Asian Tavern

Happi Songs Asian Tavern, Steven Arroyo's (Cobras & Matadors, Malo, 750 ml, Sgt. Recruiter) La Brea Pan-Asian, closed on February 24th to make way for his new restaurant, Goat, which opens tomorrow (460 S. La Brea Ave.; 323-936-7622).

Other recent closings include Angolo DiVino, Bin 8945, Bodega DeCórdova, Minibar, Mubee, Punch Grill and the Studio City branch of Killer Shrimp.

After 16 years, La Luna has closed. In an outgoing message, the owners of the Hancock Park Italian thanked loyal supporters, noting, “Our long battle with the landlord has ended, not in our favor, and it’s time for us to go.”

A number of restaurants have recently shut their doors for the last time. Among them: chef Mike Ruiz's Bistro Verdu, the Italian restaurant Bridge, Windows Steak & Martini (which was located on the 32nd floor of the AT&T Center) and the Scarboni New York Steak & Lobster House.

Fire Shuts Down Long Beach Outpost of Johnny Rebs'

An overnight fire this weekend at the Long Beach branch of BBQ chain Johnny Rebs' has forced the restaurant to shut down for a "long overdue remodel," according to the restaurant's Web site. In the meantime the other three branches are still open and ready for business.
