May the Fourth Be With You

Independence Day festivities are happening all around the Bay. To make sure you don't fizzle out before the fun ends, here are some suggestions for star-spangled eats.

In the city, celebrants can watch the fireworks – or at least see the fog change colors – at Pier 39, which will feature an afternoon of live music and entertainment from 1–9:30 PM, with the pyrotechnics commencing at 9:30 PM (for more information visit www.pier39.com). Eateries right on the pier include the Hard Rock Café, Bistro Boudin and North Beach Pizza.

For something a little more upscale, diners should consider reserving at McCormick & Kuleto's. Located in Ghirardelli Square overlooking Aquatic Park, the tiered restaurant affords guests a view of the evening’s festivities from every seat in the house. (It also offers validated parking in the garage – a boon for the waterfront-parking crush.) The regular dinner menu will be served, along with à la carte specials in the spirit of the day (415-929-1730).

Another parking-friendly option is Pres A Vi, whose Presidio location affords guests views of multiple firework shows after dining on special July 4th menu items such as barbecued chicken and ribs, corn on the cob and watermelon. The off-street underground parking garage that serves the restaurant will be open until midnight (reservations recommended; 415-409-3000).

After a year hiatus, Oakland’s annual fireworks show is back. Jack London Square (at Broadway and Embarcadero) will host five hours of live music and family entertainment, culminating with a pyrotechnics show at 9:15 PM (for more information visit www.jacklondonsquare.com). Guests can fuel up at concession stands, feast at Everett & Jones Barbecue or grab an early bite at nearby restaurants such as Yoshi’s. Diners who want to escape the crush can reserve a table at Scott’s Seafood, where they can watch the show directly from the restaurant’s interior or on the outdoor terrace.
