Fall Restaurant Preview: Beyond the City

Earlier this week we gave you a look at San Francisco's hottest fall openings. Now we've got the deets on the season's biggest arrivals outside the city, including Michael Chiarello's return to the stoves in Yountville and the latest arrival from the girl & the fig's Sondra Bernstein.

Bottega Ristorante: Celeb TV chef Michael Chiarello is angling for a late fall opening of his sprawling new Yountville restaurant, which marks his return to the professional stoves after leaving his original Napa Valley venture, Tra Vigne. Bottega will feature Chiarello’s trademark Cal-Italian cuisine and will boast a spacious outdoor patio (V Marketplace, 6525 Washington St., Yountville).

Estate: The reservations line opens September 22nd for this Italian-Med arrival from Sondra Bernstein (the girl & the fig, fig café & winebar). Setting up shop in the historic Sonoma Victorian that housed the recently shuttered restaurant The General’s Daughter, Bernstein hopes to take full advantage of the bounty from the property's extensive edible gardens outside, while offering fireside drinking and dining within (400 W. Spain St., Sonoma).

Hangar Steak: Positioning itself as the Peninsula’s newest hangout both for travelers and residents alike, this swanky new steakhouse is set in the massively overhauled San Francisco Airport Marriott in Burlingame. With a look that harks back to vintage air-travel eras, it will offer views of San Francisco Bay and the airport’s runways, which will be visible by day through the window and projected live on huge flat-screens after dark. A lighter small-plates menu will also be on offer in its sibling bar, Flight 101. Slated for the end of September, the restaurant plans to be open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch (1800 Old Bayshore Hwy., Burlingame).

Hog Island Oyster Bar: NorCal’s favorite bivalve purveyor plans to open its second sit-down outpost in Napa’s Oxbow Public Market come October. The menu will be similar to the one at its SF Ferry Building brethren, with fin fare acquired from nearby market neighbor Kanaloa Seafood, though this location will feature a grill for barbecuing its famed oysters and will also include a retail counter (610 First St., Napa).

Mayfield Bakery & Café: Part bakery, part restaurant, this forthcoming multitasker in Palo Alto's Town and Country Village is slated for November. It intends to be a local gathering spot, offering plates of seasonal cuisine paired with affordable wines. Renowned pastry chef Nancy Pitta (ex Hawthorne Lane and Boulevard) will use the stone hearth oven to bake fresh bread, which will supply other Bacchus Group restaurants like Pizza Antica and Spruce, while much of the mostly organic menu will be prepared in the wood-fired oven and rotisserie (855 El Camino Real, Palo Alto).
