Upscale Burgers for Downsized Times

With Wall Street facing a bumpy ride right now, it’s no surprise that a cheap-eats staple like the burger is more popular than ever. But don’t think that just means greasy fast-food grub – these two burger options (one already available, one coming soon) are slathering their patties with fancy-schmancy toppings.

Spruce: Through the end of November, patrons at this Pacific Heights restaurant can indulge in luxe burgers washed down with a flight of fine Burgundy wines on Sundays. Just how popular is this special menu promotion? “To be completely honest,” the hostess told the Buzz this past Sunday night, “about half the room right now is eating burgers and drinking Burgundies.” Burgers cost $14, and add-ons include foie gras ($14) and pancetta ($3), while three featured Burgundies are available by the glass ($12, $25 and $50, respectively, or $50 for a two-ounce flight of each).

Burger Bar III: If Spruce’s burger promo is any indication, the market is prime for the spring 2009 opening of the third outpost of Burger Bar, the pricey patty purveyor from Fleur de Lys chef-owner Hubert Keller (with locations already in Vegas and St. Louis). Slated to open on the sixth floor of Macy’s overlooking Union Square, the 7,000-sq. ft. restaurant will let diners build their own burgers, choosing from 40 to 50 sides. It will also sell the signature $65 Rossini Burger, featuring Kobe beef, sliced foie gras and shaved Périgord truffles (685 Market St.; no phone yet).
