The East Bay pie wars will have a new contender this fall when former IT worker-turned-pizzaiolo Keith Freilich (formerly of Pizzaiolo and Grimaldi’s in Hoboken, NJ) opens up Emilia's in Berkeley at 2995 Shattuck Ave. According an interview with the owner on Slice, the simple New York–style pies will be prepared with simple, high-end ingredients and cooked in a 800+ degree gas oven, and are not intended to compete with the recent flush of artisanal Neapolitan pizza purveyors. Do note, however, that with only 6 seats, it will mostly be a take-out affair.
