Bistro Aix bid adieu last month, but only temporarily. Owner Jonathan Beard plans to completely renovate his long-running bistro and reopen by the end of December or early January 2010. When it returns, the restaurant will feature a new oak fireplace grill, a glassed-in patio with a 100-year-old olive tree, lots of reclaimed redwood and an updated façade.

One Cool Closes, Another Comes

After 10 years, Jesse Cool has closed her jZCool Eatery and Wine Bar in Downtown Menlo Park. But all isn't lost – in late July she plans to reopen an organic lunch cafe in a larger venue at 1525 O'Brien Drive. The new cafe, another Cool Café, will be similar to her popular museum eatery at the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, with a slightly updated menu. Cool's CoolEatz catering arm will be moving to the new East Menlo Park locale as well. Meanwhile, the old jZCool space has been sold, and its new owner plans to turn it into an Italian restaurant. More details on that to come.

Lark Creek Inn, Marin's long-running special-occasion restaurant – the one that put chefs like Bradley Ogden on the map – shut its dainty Victorian doors last weekend. But the owners intend to reopen the space May 25 as The Tavern at Lark Creek – the word “tavern” being code for a more casual, less pricey sort of place. Chef-partner Erica Holland Toll will still prepare seasonal American fare, though the $15-and-under menu will skew more toward crowd favorites (think meatball sandwiches and pot roast) and will be complemented by value wines. While the exterior of the creek-side 1888 Victorian will remain the same, the interior is getting a total body makeover, including the addition of a wood-burning oven in the dining room and a refurbished brick patio.

April 18 is the last day for Carmel’s Bouchée, which recently was sold to new owners. From now until then, current owner David Fink (who will subsequently focus his time on his other operation, L'Auberge Carmel) invites guests to partake in a special three-course $35 prix fixe farewell dinner. New owner André Lemaire, a native of France, intends to reopen the restaurant around April 24 as André's Bouchée, with a similar bistro format.

On July 29th, chef Hoss Zaré's Napa restaurant Zaré shut its doors for the last time.

Zaré is also selling the property, which he had hoped to develop into an elegant new restaurant and bed and breakfast. He plans to take some time off but hopes to eventually open a new restaurant back in San Francisco, where he ran his first eponymous restaurant for 9 years, before moving to Napa.
