Songkran, aka the Thai New Year, is a three-day period (April 13th–15th) that finishes one year and transitions to the next with a series of rituals and traditions. Here are a couple of ways to celebrate at DC-area restaurants.
At Bangkok Joe, a special menu featuring noodles (to promote longevity) and other traditional dishes will be served from April 14th–20th, in addition to the regular menu. Guests can satisfy their curiosity about their fate for the coming months by shaking the ziem-zee, a container full of Thai fortune sticks.
The word larb, which means luck in Thai, is also the name of a tangy salad that's traditionally served this time of year. The Thai Basil restaurants in Ashburn and Chantilly will gift each diner with a complimentary chicken larb appetizer from April 13th–15th. Patrons will also have the chance to enter in a drawing to win a free cooking class with owner Nongkren Daks.
