Next Door, the Ali family’s American saloon, opened just in time for the inauguration, not to mention the worldwide fame of its iconic parent, Ben’s Chili Bowl, following President Obama’s visit. And though chef Rock Harper (of Hell’s Kitchen fame) has since departed to Alexandria’s Carlyle Club, Nizam Ali, co-owner and general manager, says Rock “hired some very good people that will carry on and add to what he started.” They’ll be keeping favorites like the brined fried chicken, spicy buffalo wings and dry rubbed ribs, and will add more salads, vegetarian options and a burger. One happy prospect in these budget minded times, the kitchen will be “increasing the portion size of the dishes.” Another advance – the family plans to merchandise their half-smokes and chili nationwide.
