Masa 14, the Latin-Asian collaboration by chefs/restaurateurs Richard Sandoval (Zengo) and Kaz Okochi (Kaz Sushi Bistro), is slated to open as early as next week (though we suspect it'll be more like two weeks) in the hot Logan Circle/U Street district. It will offer an exclusively small-plates menu, with surprising combinations like wok-steamed mussels in a chipotle miso
broth and short-rib empanadas with yellow curry, as well as inventive
flatbreads baked in a wood-burning oven. A 65-ft. polished concrete bar will dispense specialty cocktails, sakes, beers and wines, plus more than 100 varieties of tequila. In addition to the exposed-brick-and-timber dining room, seating options include loungey high-tops and a communal table. Banking on the high hipness quotient of its burgeoning neighborhood, it will serve food until 2 AM and 3 AM on weekends. That means long hours for the kitchen helmed by ex Commonwealth chef Anthony Burrell (1825 14th St. NW; 202-328-1414).
