Right now The Mango Tree is probably Staten Island's best kept secret for Thai cuisine but not for long. Mango offers an ambitious menu and congenial service at reasonable prices. The decor is understated--a few tables in an alcove next to a take out counter. Mango is also conversation friendly--always a good sign. Kudos to the owner who wants to make his name with his cuisine.
The lunch special offers three entrees--chicken, vegetables and tofu for $6.95, beef for $7.50 and a choice of shrimp or squid for $7.95 all served with a fresh salad and spring roll. What makes these dishes so delectable is the seasoning. chili basil, cashew nut, ginger, garlic, green curry, red curry and several others. The squid is outstanding, tender with just the right touch of ginger to give it a zingy flavor. Word has it that the sushi is first rate. Sushi is a culinary challenge to prepare and an acquired taste--the owner has lofty goals. I've already marked my calendar for a return visit
