Friends and I sometimes go to the Oyster Bat at Grand Central Station. On any given day, they might have upwards of three dozen different varieties of oysters from all over the world on the menu. Their quality is pristine. We will start with a tasting plate consisting only of varieties with which we are not familiar. Then, according to each person’s taste, each of us orders our full portion consisting of standard favorites, and perhaps some of the new varieties that we enjoyed in the sampling. We justify any excess by claiming it is a learning experience. And, nothing should prevent one from obtaining knowledge, right???
Since the main room is cavernous and noisy, we go into the bar/lounge area that is adjacent to the main room. The noise level in there is much less frenetic. They also have a nice wine by the glass menu in the bar/lounge area. The choices are many. My favorite being a nice crisp muscadet that is usually readily available.
Although it’s not Balthazar (one of my favorites) in atmosphere, it could be considered an, “oyster lover’s amusement park” due to the large selection afforded the diner.
