Babycakes sells amazing gluten-free cookies, cupcakes, brownies, banana chocolate chip bread, etc...

Also, Risoterria in the West Village has many gluten-free options.

    Re: gluten-free restaurants

Just learned that Mozzarelli's (E 23rd St between Park and Madison), which has become my favorite-ever GF establishment in recent weeks, is having this crazy all-day GF event this Sunday (they're typically closed on weekends).

Sun 11/4 from 12-6pm. 30 different kinds of GF pizza with every topping imaginable. GF chicken/eggplant parmigiana, three different GF pasta entrees, 5 different kinds of GF cheesecake, truffle cake and chocolate-dipped biscotti.

This sounds CRAZY. I think I might eat two meals there this Sunday.
    SO excited.

Not a sit down elegant restaurant but highly regarded cafe/bakery in the East Village on St Marks and Ave A is the Whole Earth Bakery. Really delicious savory foods, ie stuffed cabbage, portobello wraps, big burritos. On the sweet side, rice pudding, tofu cheesecake, blueberry scones and everything is made without sugar, dairy or oils. It is a vegan cafe and you will miss the junk most places use as fillers but not the taste. The owner, Peter, is a total expert baker and makes everyone feel like they live in the neighborhood. Just go...

    Re: gluten-free restaurants

During our recent visit to New York, I found that 95% of the restaurants all understood what gluten intolerance is. In particular, Benoit, Jean-Georges, Bolud - even Rao's who kindly prepared the meatballs with the gluten free breadcrumbs we provided, as well as the brown rice linguini. Having been diagnosed with celiac disease since 1976, I am gleeful and astounded at the awareness restaurants have today. I find that they err on the side of caution, but a little guidance when they question you always leads to perfect results.

For more upscale dining, Lumi on Lexington at 70th has an extensive gluten free menu. It is also Tuscan influenced so we celiacs can finally enjoy Italian food - they even have gluten free spaghetti. My one visit found the food and the service to both be excellent. The gluten free menu is posted on their website.

    Re: gluten-free restaurants

I think this posting shows that any number of people are interested in this-free and that-free type of cuisine...  If only more restaurants would be more interested in providing such...as I'm sure that there are many niches where many could operate....even if it is just a portion of their menu...  Sugar free; MSG free; chemical free; hormone free; antibiotics free; etc...     For those who would like info about celiac and other gastro-related issues, the best I've found was http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.com/  it helped me to save my mother's life.

you may already know this but outback, bonefish grille, carrabas all have gluten free menus. so does chilis and appleby's.
i often take pasta with me to restaurants. precooked bionaturae pasta in a zip lock. have the restaurant sauce it. little chance of flour contam in pasta sauce. and blue diamon rice crackers kick butt. almond, pecan...with a tad of butter taste like great french bread. great with soups.
