We usually dine at Daily Grill--American Comfort food; great salads, chicken pot pie, hamburgers. Also, Colibri for upscale Mexican across the street. A bit farther west on Geary is Grand Cafe, and a block or two away are Le Colonial, excellent but pricey French/Vietnamese food, Kuletos and La Scala for Italian, Millenium for upscale vegetarian.

La Scala is quite nice;; Grand Cafe used to be very good but I have heard it has gone way downhill. If you are willing to walk a bit more, Gitane has a cool atmosphere and interesting food.

My long-time favorite is Fino, in the Andrews Hotel on Post St at Taylor, about 2 blocks from the theater. There is a valet parking lot in Cosmo Place, enter from Taylor Street, and an entrance to the restaurant from Cosmo. Extensive Italian menu, lots of vegetarian choices, lovely two-part dining room with fireplace, small but not too cramped, full bar. Reasonably priced, especially for the area, interesting wines, many Italian.
