    Re: Real NYC Cheesecake!

The very best true original New York Cheesecake is from S&S Cheesecake in the Bronx. They've been doing it for over 50 years and supply many of the best steakhouses in the country. I order them for gifts since they are not very convenient. Have fun finding your favorite!

    Re: Real NYC Cheesecake!

I have to agree with Todd that S&S is the best NY Cheesecake, and not just because it's made several blocks from where I grew up, either. I like Junior's but the consistency of S&S is more classic and dense. Junior's is a lighter consistency. Both are really excellent. It's a matter of personal preference, of course. I now live in the Hartford, CT area and find S&S cheesecake for sale whole and in slices at "Rein's Deli" in Vernon. So if anyone is in that area, you can have some of the best cheesecake known to mankind without having to search for it. Happy cheesecake hunting!

    Re: Real NYC Cheesecake!

Wow! What a pleasure to find this community of lovers of S&S Cheesecake...I guess that's why S&S is annually RATED #1 ZAGAT's itself as the BEST cheesecake in America! You made my day, really!

You'l love this one: My husband has been devouring the 10" consistently for 20 years! When we were married we catered our entire dessert menu with S&S's traditional white and chocolate cheesecakes. Our 300 guests went out of their minds, as we were married in LA and they simply had never experienced anything like it.

Smile...but you know we all agree that If there were picture next to the word "ECSTACY" you know know that one of the S&S brands would be glowing brightly oozing right off the page. (lol)

p.s. Don't tell my husband, Steve, but if I had to choose between a late night of "fun" with him or indulge in a slice or two of S&S, well...sorry Steve! But then again I'm not delusional, I'm sure he feels the same way!

    Re: Real NYC Cheesecake!

I know the Junior's fans will stick with their brand, as is typical. I prefer S & S Cheesecake in the Bronx. They are much more modest, they don't have the flashy tourist-attraction aesthetic, but they have their impeccable cheesecakes. That's all they do, and they've done it perfectly, 80 years strong. Their Bronx location is NOT for retail sales, so they sell their cheesecakes out of the neighboring bodegas. Their cheesecakes are so classic, their outstanding reputation is largely built on word-of-mouth by devoted customers. Junior's is mass-marketed, while you have to hunt for S & S (which may account for their smaller, but loyal, cult following). I've had S & S cheesecakes for birthday cakes since I was a little girl, courtesy of my dad, who worked at the nearby Bronx VA for 45 years. I've even ordered them when I was living in other states, as far away as Minnesota. Now friends of mine in the south, midwest and west coast, order them annually for their parties. Their mail order distribution is done by Morey & Dorey's, based in Riverdale. You have to yell your address to the sweet/cranky, hard-of-hearing man that answers the phone. Yes, there is a legitimate M & D website, but he doesn't seem to know anything about it. The cheesecakes arrive perfectly intact, in budge and shock proof packaging. It's worth having to spend some time repeating yourself to the guy that takes the orders "on the honor system," where checks are sent AFTER you receive your order. He swears he hasn't been burned yet, and he may be Father Time's brother.

The Junior's vs S & S Cheesecake debate may be older than Mets vs Yankees. I guess you'll like what you know, first and foremost. However, I have never (in 30+ years) served anyone a bite of an S & S cake without them saying it was the best they've ever had. EVER. If you only do one thing, do it the best. S & S do.

    Re: Real NYC Cheesecake!

Actually S&S does sell the cheesecake out of their location but as far as I know but only around big holidays. The line used to get pretty long as I remember. The cheesecakes were always fresh and sometimes still warm. My Dad is still in the neighborhood and says he knows people who have recently bought them that way so I guess they still do it.

    Jackm ...

Fret no more. This was in today’s NY Times (see date, below), so it couldn’t be more current. With the high cost of gasoline, shipping would not only expedite your order, most likely, it would save you money, also. Of course NYC will still await your visit.

    **** NY Times, October 1, 2008
    MOREY & DOREY'S 3733 Riverdale Avenue, Bronx 10463; (212) 796-1060 or (800) 822-5369.
No fancy flavorings, no glitzy decorations, this is the S & S cheesecake of New York, famous for its firm crust and its flavor of cheese and cheese alone. If you like your cheesecake old fashioned, you'll want one of these. The five-pound cake is $26, including shipping.
Checks or money orders. Cutoff date for Christmas: Dec. 22 *****

I was born in Brooklyn and as a kid; I considered Nathan’s hot dogs and Junior’s cheesecake not to be food, but rather something akin to, and as important as, air and water!

A while, after moving to Manhattan I had my first taste of S & S Cheesecake. It was a classic case of; an ‘irresistible force’ meeting an ‘immoveable object’. Not that it lessened Junior’s great product, which remains great to this day, but, I found something better than the best!!! “Sacre Bleu” and “Oy Vey”, rolled into one!!!

Rest assured, I would never pass up a slice of Junior’s terrific creation, but given the choice of having to choose between the two, I would have to give the very slight edge to S & S.
