Kirk,
LOL
That analogy is even better. That would mean that when I walk into Per Se they will customizes the meal/menu to my exact specifications. Wow - that blows away everyone of these 'the chef is the artiste' arguments!
Thanks Kirk ;-)

Ok - I have to add a few more words here. Because. I. Have. To.
To all those who do not want to offend the sensibilities of the chef: The next time you try on/buy a new suit or trousers or dress or skirt and have any inclination to hem the length or taper the fit...don't you dare. An artist created those pieces and it ...

Ahhhhhhh some things never change. I've been on hiatus for several weeks and this discussion thread is still drawing attention.
Allow me to jump back into the fray...
Why anyone cares what anyone else eats is beyond me. As an allergy sufferer who also hates a few choice food items, it's often a necessity and sometimes my ...

I totally agree with Kenard ;-) Dizzy's is perfect.
If you want a smaller more intimate venue, try Smoke on Broadway between 105th and 106th smokejazz.com
For both Dizzy's and Smoke you can book a reservation through Open Table: opentable.com

Hi MGD,
I guess there will always be positives and negatives for any restaurant. I've only been there once, but my own experience at Porter House was wonderful. It was Valentine's Day a year ago and they were quite busy - yet the service and the meal were spectacular. Maybe I was just lucky - or just feeling the love of the ...

I try to stay away from the crowded spots on St. Patrick's Day...but there is a cute bar/restaurant in my work neighborhood that I like. Jack's. http://www.jacksrestaurantandbar.com/index.htm is Irish owned and staffed and even though their regular menu is quite global, I would guess that they'll have a special menu on March 17th.

My 2 very different suggestions:
Very similar to The Waldorf would be a traditional English Tea at The Gallery at The Carlyle Hotel http://www.thecarlyle.com/dine3.cfm
Alice'sTea Cup on the Upper West Side is much more casual and neighborhood-y http://alicesteacup.com/
Either one would be great mom options ;-)

Hi MGD,
That area right around the Beacon is a bit bereft of the type of place that I think you are looking for. The places I've listed are all walkable, or a short taxi/subway ride.
You should look into these - they are all in the general vicinity. I attached the Zagat links to the right. If you go to menupages.com ...

Reagrding the Times article:
1) Whether I check my coat or not (if it's offered) depends on the type of restaurant as well as the length of my coat.
2) I completely understand the coat check/label envy aspect. I will wear a Donna Karan coat instead of a Gap jacket if I know I will be checking it. Sorry..at least I cop to ...

Hi MGD,
Memorable in what way? Cool/Hip? Traditional/Classic/Landmark?
Pretty/Neighborhood? Old School Italian/stellar service? Price is no object/world renowned chefs?
The Beacon is at Broadway and 74th (I think)...do you mind a walk about 10 or 12 blocks in either direction...or do you want something that ...
